Geocache Description:

A small cache on a walk around Turton and Longworth Moors.

Overview of the series:

In days on yore the renowned geocachers and cartographers “Pengy & Tigger” published a new map of Turton and Longworth Moors (shown on the “Here be Dragons: The Moor the Merrier” cache page, reference GC11BYW). They noted how the area of the map around Turton Moor was strangely empty of caches, and in line with tradition marked the area of the map as possibly being inhabited by various mythological creatures, particularly dragons.

Captain Toby, distant ancestor of the “Toby’s Jugs” geocaching team was intrigued by the prospect of dragons so close to his doorstep and set about assembling a team of brave individuals to venture into the wilderness to see if the rumours could be true.

The “Dragon’s Quest” series has been placed along the route taken by the intrepid explorers.

About this cache:

Finally, the team reached “Pasture House Hey”, where they found a strange man who was able to confirm that the dragons of Turton Moor did indeed exist, and was able to tell them where to look. On went the explorers………

The serious bit:

In order to find the dragons of Turton Moor you will (probably) have to find all six of the “Dragons Quest” caches, four of which contain clues to the location of the dragons. Each of the caches is small and contains a number of small toys, together with a logbook (where you will find the clue if there is one), and a FTF certificate (for the FTF naturally).

It is possible to complete the quest in a day long walk, but you will probably have to walk the best part of ten miles to do so. You may therefore decide to complete it in stages. We set the first six stages in a day long walk of nine miles, and the final cache on a separate day.

Whichever order you do the caches in, and the numbered order is recommended, you WILL have to stray well off the path to get the final cache. There are routes to it that do not involve climbing over walls or fences, so please try to avoid doing so. You will get muddy and you will probably fall over on the rough terrain: so if you don’t want that to happen, don’t attempt it! I’m not apologising for any of this, you have to make the effort to find mythological creatures!

To reward the efforts of the first intrepid explorers, when placed the final cache (which is an ammo box) contained a FTF certificate and 13 Turton Moor dragons (as well as their three leaders, all of whom are travel bugs). Feel free to liberate one dragon per team, and if you feel obliged to swap something for it, in order to keep the box replenished in the chosen theme, it would be good if you could swap for some other creature of legend (I’m sure you have plenty of them lying around).

Oh, and despite the fact that we took Archie Jug in his off road buggy when we set the series, it is definitely NOT suitable for buggies or bikes!!

Enjoy the quest!
