Clinton River Headwaters, located in Independence Oaks Park, part of the Oakland County Parks, Michigan.

The posted coordinates are located in the Oakland County Parks, Independence Oaks Park.

A watershed is an area of land that drains to a common point. The State of Michigan has 63 major watersheds, 38 located in the Lower Peninsula. The Clinton Watershed is located in Southeast Michigan, north of Detroit, draining 763 square miles. The Clinton River, the furthest stream in the watershed, is approximately 80 miles long, with 260 miles of major tributaries flowing into it. Major tributaries include Sashabaw Creek, Galloway Creek, Paint Creek, Stony Creek, Red Run, Middle Branch of the Clinton River, North Branch of the Clinton River, and the Clinton River Cut-off Channel. The Clinton River is heavily influenced by glacier deposits. The west side of this watershed is made up of outwash deposits and moraines, which is well drained. The east side is made up of clay lake plain and sand lake plain and soils, which has a low infiltration capacity. The Clinton River flows through Oakland and Macomb Counties and empties into Lake St. Clair, elevation 574 ft. The 5 mile headwater segment of the Clinton River is located from North Central Oakland County to Middle Lake in Clarkston.

This Earthcache takes you to two headwater segment locations of the Clinton River. The first location is at the beginning of this beautiful river. It is located in Independence Oaks County Park in Oakland County. The second location is 3.5 miles downstream where it crosses Perry Lake Road in Clarkston. You will need to answer the following to me by e-mail, do not post the answers.

1.) What is the elevation of the Headwaters at Independence Oaks county Park? Descibe the river banks / river bed and the flow of the water at this location.
2.) Go to N42*44.699 W083*24.585 What is the elevation difference at Perry Lake Road? Descibe the river banks / river bed and the flow of the water at this location.
3.) Post a picture of yourself with the Headwater signs at Independence Oaks Park.

Out for some caching on a very nice day. I didn't get the annual permit this year so I was going to make the best of the daily fee by finding all of the caches in this park. Sent the required info and thanks for the lesson. TFTEC

Found it. This was a nice change from the usual river gauging station or erratic boulder earth cache. TFTEC!

Out knocking off earthcaches with Brummelbear and he was good enough to stop and let me visit the beginning of my favorite watershed. It was a great stop for me as I have several Clinton River Watershed ECs. The bonus of this cache is you get to go to two spots of the river's infancy.
