A watershed is an area of land that drains to a common point.
The State of Michigan has 63 major watersheds, 38 located in the
Lower Peninsula. The Clinton Watershed is located in Southeast
Michigan, north of Detroit, draining 763 square miles. The Clinton
River, the furthest stream in the watershed, is approximately 80
miles long, with 260 miles of major tributaries flowing into it.
Major tributaries include Sashabaw Creek, Galloway Creek, Paint
Creek, Stony Creek, Red Run, Middle Branch of the Clinton River,
North Branch of the Clinton River, and the Clinton River Cut-off
Channel. The Clinton River is heavily influenced by glacier
deposits. The west side of this watershed is made up of outwash
deposits and moraines, which is well drained. The east side is made
up of clay lake plain and sand lake plain and soils, which has a
low infiltration capacity. The Clinton River flows through Oakland
and Macomb Counties and empties into Lake St. Clair, elevation 574
ft. The 5 mile headwater segment of the Clinton River is located
from North Central Oakland County to Middle Lake in Clarkston.
