Parque Metropolitano Thanksgiving Event 2007 Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

sumajman: As far as we know this was the first publicized geocaching event in Ecuador. We had 14 people show, most ex-patriot North Americans and one Ecuadorian. We generated some interest among bystanders as we organized for the hunt. We made some new friends as not all the ex-pats knew each other until the event. The winning team with the most caches was team McCracken (Steve, Kayla and Kendra). Way to go!

Geocache Description:

Come participate with us the day after Thanksgiving for the first ever Parque Metropolitano Geocaching Event. It starts at 9 a.m. at the listed coordinates. This is for the whole family! We plan to go half a day. You can compete or just go at your own speed. Numerous geocaches and lots of fun for all!

Dads, Moms and kids…. You are all invited to participate in a new family sport called geocaching. Since many of you will be in Quito for a missionary Thanksgiving get-together, we want to ask you to stay over and participate in a half-day of geocaching in Parque Metropolitano the following day...

• Time: starts at 9 a.m. until noon, 23 Nov.
• Start location: S 00.11.015 W078.27.856 (the main parking area at Parque Metropolitano near the snack stands)
• We plan to add new geocaches.
• Bring: GPS Receiver if you have one (not require to participate); water, dress for hiking, a few trinkets to exchange (optional).

Geocaching is a sport where you look for a hidden treasure utilizing a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver. A typical “cache” will consist of a Tupperware-like container with a log book, a pen, and some small, inexpensive trinkets (a keychain, earrings, etc.) for exchange. Here’s what you do:
1. Find the cache and open it,
2. Register your find in the logbook,
3. Take one of the trinkets,
4. Leave a trinket of equal value
5. When you get home, log your visit to the cache on-line at www.geocaching.com

At 9 a.m. we’ll organize the geocaching teams so that each team has at least one GPS receivers. There will be two categories of teams:
• Competitive – that means that the team wants to find all the geocaches and get back to the start point before other competitive teams.
• Just-for-fun – that means that the team is not in a hurry, not running to get to the finish line.

You decide in which category of team you wish to participate.

Because geocaching is a relatively unknown in Ecuador outside of missionary and tourist circles, we want this event to be open to anyone that wishes to come. If you have a national friend that you would like to invite, by all means bring them along. This will help us build up the sport locally.

En Espanol:

Padres, madres, hijos….

• Vamos a esconder nuevos caches.
