"Der Große Pfahl" – Bavarian’s Geotope #1




On a trip around the integral nature reserve "Großer Pfahl" you will learn interesting
and worth knowing things about flora and fauna, quartz stone pits and fairy stories about the
"Pfahl" in the Bavarian Forest.

Key Features:
Up to 30 m high and often hundreds of meters long rocks which contains quartz and slate.

Lenght:
More than 140 kilometer.

Broad:
From 10 metre up to 4 kilometer.

Quartz Vein: 2 centimeter up 100 meter
Slate Vein: up to 2 kilometer

Age:
Slate: circa 340 million years
Quartz: circa 240 million years

Developing:
From Schwarzenfeld in the Oberpfalz up to Linz in Austria.

Special Places:
Moosbach ( GCX12Q )
Viechtach ( GC18VRX )
Regen ( GCA2D9 ) )

Highest Part:
758 meter above Mean Sea Level at castle ruin Weißenstein

Name:
The word "Pfahl" is derived from the latin word "pallidus" which means swallow and complexionless
In german:
"pallidus" = fahl, bleich (Pfahl ~ fahl)

Quartz Stone Pit:
The pit was founded in 1892.
Quartz was used for streets and later for the glass industry.
Since 1939 is it a nature protection area.
Then it was only allowed to mine quartz in special locations, like Viechtach.
This quartz was used for terrazzo paving stones.
The quartz from Viechtach was famous for its acid- and abrasion-resistance.
The last application was for microchip-silicium and for photovoltaic.
After 101 years the pit was discontinued in 1992.

"Der große Pfahl" - Bavarian's first Geotope since 2002


One of the most important beauties of nature in the Bavarian Forest is the white legendary Quartz rocks of the "Pfahl".



"Der große Pfahl"crosses as a very old break line by a length of nearly 150 km the Bavarian Forest's basement. There is, due to its geology meaning and nonrecurring, a world wide interest.



In today's scenery is this "Artwork of the Nature" in manifolds forms: impressive and spectacularly is its towering white quartz, or the deep magnificent Pfahl-slate towers.

It was a grandiose Place for castles and burgs. A special rich flora and fauna is located near the Pfahl-region.



The Pfahl are over ten proactive areas which were submitted to the Europe Union as a nature protective area.

Wieder ein sehenswerter Earth-Cache und sogar mit informativem Rundgang. So haben wir unseren Kurzurlaub im Bayerischen Wald in Begleitung von ataok (Earth-Cache-Premiere!) erfolgreich ausklingen lassen. Vielen Dank fürs Herlocken.

Heute bei schönem Wetter eine Runde um den Pfahl spaziert. Ich wollte mir das schon lange mal ansehen und heute hats endlich geklappt. Danke für den schönen Sonntagsspaziergang.

Der Ausflug zum Großen Pfahl war einer der schönsten unseres Urlaubs im Bayrischen Wald. Dabei erlebten wir schonmal einen Vorgeschmack auf den kommenden Winter ;-) Im Regen fuhren wir los, im Schneeregen begannen wir den Rundweg um dieses eindrucksvolle Naturdenkmal. Auf der Rückfahrt ging dann über den Sankt Egidi gar nichts mehr, weil es so sehr geschneit hatte. Aber zurück zum Pfahl. Es war ein wirklich sehr interessanter Spaziergang rund um den Pfahl. Wir kamen gar nicht so recht voran, weil ich immerzu Fotos schießen musste ;-) Im Log vorher hatte ich ja schon etwas von einem Drachen gelesen, dem wir auch gleich zu Anfang begegneten. Eindrucksvoll fand ich auch die senkrechten Spalten mitten im Fels im oberen Teil des Pfahls. Auf dem Rückweg erinnerte nur die neben dem Pfahl verlaufende Straße an die "Zivilisation". Anschließend sind wir - auf der Suche nach einer heißen Tasse Schokolade zum Aufwärmen - zufällig auf die Ausstellung gestoßen und haben uns die auch noch angeschaut.
