Geocache Description:

I heard about Link-a-Pix puzzles on an episode of the Podcacher podcast (episode 275.0) and tried to think of a way to relate it directly to a geocache.  Then I purchased my Android phone and found that there was a bar code scanner app that could scan QR codes.  The level of difficulty is for the puzzle and the need for specialized equipment.  Once the puzzle is solved the cache should be easy to find.

Download the puzzle here.

A Link-a-Pix puzzle consists of a grid containing clues in various places. Every clue, except for the 1’s, is half of a pair. The object is to reveal a hidden QR code by linking the pairs and painting the paths so that the number of squares in the path, including the squares at the ends, equals the value of the clues being linked together. Squares containing 1 represent paths that are 1-square long. Paths may follow horizontal or vertical directions and are not allowed to cross other paths.  I tried to make the puzzle as simple as possible by eliminating many of the options for each path.  It would be almost impossible to find a solution given the complete randomness of a path as small as four units, not to mention longer paths of more units.  (Link for more information.)

A QR Code is a two dimension bar-code that can store different types of information including; Calendar events, Contact information, Email address, Geo location, Phone number, SMS, Text, URL, and WiFi Network information.  Originally, I was going to use the Geo location option but learned that it only allows decimal degree coordinates and it didn't import the information into an app that would allow for direct navigation.  I then decided on plain text.  (Link for more information.)

Once the puzzle is solved you will need to manually enter the coordinates into your GPSr or other navigation able device.
