Geocache Description:

The Tusk of the Daywalker is a vampiric talisman. Decipher the musical clue to find the cache!

In May 2002 a rain-soaked camera was found in the woods with a single undeveloped picture (shown developed above). The whereabouts of the photographer have never been discerned but the subject of the photo has since been identified as a person who also appears to have graced photographs from as far back as the 1800's ...

The posted co-ordinates are not those of the actual geocache, they instead mark the location of an abandoned coffin that lies off the banks of the Ottawa River. Legend has it that it was once the daytime residence of a 200 year old vampire named Nicodemus. It was said that Nicodemus (being a bit of a historical buff ) had been searching the last few decades for a mystical talisman, the tusk of a mysterious creature that held the key to the ability all vampirish folk seek. To be able to walk in the daylight. To become a daywalker (bursting into flames at the first hint of daylight is a real drag for vampires). Once removed from the creature (a deadly act in and of itself) it is capped and the marrow extracted as a reagent.

The Ionian Tusk was reportedly found by Nicodemus in 1999 and quickly hidden somewhere close to the shores he once roamed. Not one to hoard such a valuable discovery Nicodemus apparently left clues to it's whereabouts for the vampire community at large. Being a musician in his formative years (Even in 1817 the lifestyle of a musician lent itself well to vampirism) he fashioned a secret melody in May of 2002 and hid it in one of his compositions. Keeping with the times, the music is made up of distorted single-line electric guitar improvisations over a clean chorus/delay backing track. Although the improvisations themselves do not repeat there is a distinct melody containing 14 notes that repeats twice. Research shows that these may map to values of longitude and latitude in the form N dd.mm.mmm W dd.mm.mmm. As luck would have it the Tusk marker is thought to be close to his old coffin, so the first four values North (N 45.29.xxx) and the first three values West ( not counting zero W 75 3x.xxx) are probably identical to that of the marker (an additional aid to deciphering the melody).

The music can be heard here (Ionian-Tusk.mp3 - 2MB)

(right-click on the link and select "save target as" if you wish to copy it to your local hard drive)

The co-ordinates secreted in the melody take the seeker to an old tree upon which a marker has been placed which points to a second tag and then to the final location of the Ionian Tusk itself.

As the photo suggests, it is apparent that Nicodemus must return to the Tusk from time to time to replenish the daywalker ability. Although this search can be conducted at night, it is far less creepy in the day, and you have less chance of running into creatures of the night.

To proceed to the location of the coffin, you can park at a dead-end street that leads to a trail-head at N 45.29.126 W075 32.016 (parking between 6:00 to 21:00. Outside those hours you just have to park a bit further up the street).

Update: 2003-06-22 - Added a copper tag to the tree with the now smashed tree marker. Coffin has disappeared but the tusk remains intact! The Vampire slayers have been busy...

Update: 2008-03-20 Model12 did some tag Maintenance for me after I went in and added a new cache. he ended up adding TWO tags to find the cache...Thanks man!
