Acorn the Squirrel is interested in all things squirrelly, and has
been fascinated by the town of Squirrel since first finding it on a
map a few years ago. The few remaining buildings in this town are a
reminder of a time when farming was often a smaller, family run
occupation, rather than the large-scale operations of today.
The cache is located at the Squirrel Cemetery. Some of the
modest monuments may give you a reason to pause and think about
life as it may have been 100 years ago. (See Pictures
“Cemetery 1”, “Cemetery 2”)
Please be respectful of the site or any
sites of this nature!!! You do not need to trample around or cross
private areas to find this cache. If you have to do any of those
things, you are doing something wrong!
About a mile away was the town of Squirrel (N 044 01.629, W 111
17.873). The most noteworthy structure is an old social hall (the
Squirrel Dance Hall, see Picture “Dance Hall”), which
always conjures up an image of a large number of dancing squirrels.
Across the street is a building that may be used as a home today,
but I suspect may have originally been a general store or post
office.
There is also an old (abandoned) one-room schoolhouse close by
at N 044 03.386, W 111 14.725. (See Picture “School”).
I believe it was called the Kelly School. A lucky cacher (me!) was
able to use this school as an entry for the "One Room Schoolhouses"
cache (GC7448)!
The cache is a small (1.2qt) clear/blue Rubbermaid container,
wrapped up in black plastic bag. Its contents include a logbook,
two pens, a Geocaching description note and a variety of trade
items.
If you have difficulty finding the cache, read the hint and look
at the spoiler photos—but note that they pretty much give it
completely away!
