Located in Island Park along the Henry's Fork. Drive about 2.5 miles north of Pond's Lodge and turn west on the Kilgore-Yale Road. Turn north onto FR 130 and look for the signs to Coffee Pot Campground. Park in the fisherman's overflow parking.

According to hiking lore expert Jerry Painter, a trapper, rancher and military scout by the name of George Rea was paddling his canoe along the calm waters of the Henry's Fork. But around a bend in the river, a section of nasty rapids filled with boulders awaited him. His canoe overturned, and all he managed to save was his coffee pot. (But Jerry said it better -- it's in his book, "Hiking & Biking Trails near Idaho Falls, Vol. II.")

This is a fairly mellow and shaded hike along a well-established fishing trail. Round-trip to the cache is about 4.5 miles, which my 8-year-old did with ease. There are also a few spots on the way to wade out in the water -- with parental supervision, of course!

The cache is in a coffee can (what else?) and contains a log book and pencil, a new paperback copy of A Midsummer Night's Dream, a travel pack of Kleenex, a couple 2-cent Euros from Ireland, a dream catcher necklace, a keychain from Canada, and an unopened Happy Meal toy or two.

Cache Logs

Set out to find the cache and picnic. Got partway up the trail and noticed a huckleberry... 2... 3... more... Guzzled all the water from a water bottle and took a 2 hour break from hiking to fill the waterbottle with huckleberries. Found the geocache. Loved the huckleberries.

Incidentally, my dad tells me - after the fact - that there's a bridge a little further down the trail to cross over (so you can get GCWAKC maybe?) No worries, we'll be back up next year to, ahem, pick huckleberries... I'll have to check it out. :)

TNLN TFTHuckleberries!

Third time into Coffee Pot Cache, kids love the hike. Moose in the river about half way in. Too early for the huckleberries.
