Geocache Description:

Finnish Farm Find

Cachers may view the farm on a self-guided tour:  There are 16 historic buildings, along with various pieces of historic equipment, on this 40-acre facility and each building is clearly marked for the tour. Each pays tribute to the area's hearty early settlers.

The most unique building on the farm is the Finnish style sauna.  The firebox is covered with stones without a chimney.  The smoke holes were opened after the fire died out to release the smoke.  The result was a smoky odor when water was poured over the rocks.  A dressing room was provided and a kerosene lamp was used to light both rooms.

The root cellar was created by digging into the hill behind the main house. The thick layer of earth insulated the vegetables and canned goods from freezing during the very cold and long winters.  Eli raised vegetables such as potatoes, rutabagas, carrots and onions.  Anything not raised on the farm would be purchased by Eli at the local area Co-op store.

More than likely, Eli raised a cow or two for his milk and cheese and fished the local streams. Cachers can visit the barn and view the unusual window in the second story. The glass is a type that scatters the rays of light. It was necessary to do this as direct sunlight could ignite the hay and cause a fire.

A visit to this historical farm will reward you with a trip back in time when the skills of lumbering, woodworking, and farming  were necessary to put food on the table to exist.

The farm is open year round but it is not plowed in the winter. Admission is FREE.

This is one of several caches that the Walkie Talkies and WoodsWoman have placed or will be placing in the area for geocachers to enjoy the views and history of our part of Minnesota's Iron Range. Please check out the others in and around Biwabik, Aurora, and Hoyt Lakes.

Located approximately twenty miles south of Biwabik on Highway 4 on the west side.

Cache container is a small ammo can. Original contents were some hiking gadgets, some children's toys, some fishing lures. Our TB "The Colonel's Little Friend" got its start here on its way to Kentucky.
