Geocache Description:

I'd be quite surprised to find anyone who hasn't ever heard or sung "Ninety-nine Bottles Of Beer On The Wall". But where did it come from???

This "bottle of beer" cache takes the name of my youngest cat. Any of you who know me know I love her SOOO MUCH! So this is for her!

Now, about the song...

Not only is it standard from childhood, but it has also been written in just about every computer programming language in the world, starting with BASIC:

10 REM BASIC Version of 99 Bottles of beer
20 FOR X=100 TO 1 STEP -1
30 PRINT X;"Bottle(s) of beer on the wall,";X;"bottle(s) of beer"
40 PRINT "Take one down and pass it around,"
60 NEXT

This silly song has also been used by college philosophy students:

"Take one down and pass it around, 98 bottles of beer on the wall." Simple, direct, and remarkably lucid, 99 Bottles of Beer reflects the basic nature of existence. Philosophically it pulls no punches. Indeed, eventually there will be no more bottles of beer on the wall. Eventually, we will have passed around ninety nine bottles of beer and This Life will fade away into obscurity...a dim memory dreamed from the depths of a drunken stupor.

So where did this remarkably irritating yet timeless ditty come from? It seems that its origin can be found in the English version of the song called "Ten Green Bottles":

"Ten green bottles hanging on the wall
Ten green bottles hanging on the wall
And if one green bottle should accidentally fall
There'd be nine green bottles hanging on the wall..."

Somehow it transformed into ninety-nine here in America. And here we are with this timeless classic.

A side-note: There was the song's debut on The Simpsons, though it was changed slightly to "99 boxes of bottles of beer on the wall", which puts it in an odd time, much to the delight of you progressive musicians out there.

So next time your kids are driving you nuts with this song, just think back to the middle ages when children irritated their parents in horse-drawn wagons on the way to Canterbury with the ancestor of this tune!
