Geocache Description:

As you approach this mountain from The Detroit Lake side on Hwy 22 you will see a big flat topped ridge that kinda looks like a stump. But you can only see it on one section of the road while going east... If youre lucky. [:D] This is what spurred the imagination of the CFM to call the mountain Byron's Famous Stump. Then Odder said hey, lets place a cache for Byron & Anne 'cause they have so many nice caches! And it was agreed.

This cache will take you to the summit of Coffin Mountain.
Hike to the summit is 1.5 miles with 800 feet elevation gain. The route passes through old-growth and fire-denuded forest. In late July and early August, the summit ridge features a bear grass bloom extravaganza. Atop the mountain stands a fire lookout tower, staffed during the summer months. The summit view sweeps the Cascade crest spotlighting Mounts Jefferson, Adams, Hood, and Washington; the Three Sisters; and Three Fingered Jack. Olallie Butte, Detroit Lake, and a neighboring former lookout site, Bachelor Mountain, add to the vista lineup. Because the trail is dry and often exposed, carry plenty of water...

This used to be a 3 stage multi cache, but since there were so few visits to the cache within the first few years of its life, the stages were to lost to time. So the first set of #s will take you to the parking place. Then plug in these numbers that will take you to the cache: N 44° 37.184 W 122° 02.754. The final cache is good sized, and includes a very nice Odder Orig. Watercolor cat and a couple shineys along with all the rest of the normal cache stuff and items.

Heres the road directions: From Sweet Home, go up towards green peter reservoir and stay on the paved road (Forest Service road 11) until you get to the first 1168 road and go left. Then follow your GPS...

From Hwy 22 take Slide Cr. Rd (Forest Service road 11) to the second 1168 road. (The first road will get you there too but its a longer rougher journey.) Then follow your GPS...
