Geocache Description:

The nearly vertical monolith known as Devils Tower rises 1,267 feet above the meandering Belle Fourche River. Once hidden below the earth's surface, erosion has stripped away the softer rock layers revealing Devils Tower. Known by several northern plains tribes as Bears Lodge, it is a sacred site of worship for many American Indians. The rolling hills of this 1,347 acre park are covered with pine forests, deciduous woodlands, and prairie grasslands. Deer, prairie dogs, and other wildlife are abundant. Proclaimed September 24, 1906 as the nation's first national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt. 01/08/06 - Imagine my surprise when I came to check coords and cache maintenance to find that the tree I used to hide this cache had been cut down with a chainsaw (maybe a Christmas Tree). I found the remnants of the cache strewn about and covered with snow. The new cache has been placed in the same vacinity and has room to trade very small items. 07/07/18 - Again surprised to find that my cache hiding place had been removed and an unknown cacher replaced it very close by. Evidently another cacher thought it might have been to difficult so placed about cache 4 feet away. There is now only one cache available. There is a cache accessory by the cache. If it is ever removed, you will have to be creative to log a smiley face ! This is why the 3.0 difficulty rating...If there is snow on the ground, you may not be able to find the TOTT!! If you are interested in walking around the monument, you might want to visit virtual cache GC22DD. 06/25/18 - cache has been moved again. The permanent spot will not be an easy cache. Good Luck While Geocaching Amock
