General
Please check the location of this cache on a map before attempting.
There's only one main way to get to this cache, which involves a
~1100m ascent from the valley floor. The track up through the trees
is well marked, but quite steep. Further on above the bushline, the
track is not very obvious, but follows a jagged ridge to the
summit.
The Cache
The cache itself is a 500ml lock-n-lock style cylindrical, fully
sealed container. There is only room for very small trades - it's
probably best to treat this as a logbook only cache. Please cover
this cache well as keas will destroy it if it's left accessible.
You're going to need to dig for this cache if attempting in winter
time! Coordinates were averaged over 300 readings, ~3m
accuracy.
Disclaimer
This cache is set high in an exposed alpine environment that is
prone to weather changes at any time. Please ensure you plan for
this when attempting this cache. ie. think about what clothing,
footwear, food, water, first aid, snow equipment and maps you need
to bring. You should also sign in your intentions and check
conditions at the local DOC office before setting off (But don't
forget to sign out when you get back). This cache is only suited to
physically fit persons and is not suitable for young children.
Final Note
Don't forget to take your camera - the views from the ridge and the
summit are just stunning, and you can see directly into the back of
Mt Rolleston and the Crow Glacier. For a fast way off the mountain
that's easy on the knees, consider running down the long (700m
vertical!) soft shingle scree that drops from peak 1760 into Rough
Creek, then out the creek to the road. Only attempt this in clear
weather as the Creek can turn dangerous after heavy rain.
Enjoy!
