Silva Promontorium is Latin for Forest Ridges, otherewise know here as Woodland Dunes
You will be standing near what Geologist's call glacial history, created by glacial lake forces. A very long time ago, water covered this area. As the earths crust rose, lakes were formed in various areas. The lake we are talking about here is, of course, Lake Michigan. Can you imagine that after the glaciers melted off, that Lake Michigan as we know it now, WAS over 600 ft higher ???

Here at Woodland Dunes, the shape and direction of the dunes is different than what you will see at Point Beach State Park and the Ridges Sanctuary in Door Co. Rather than being parallel to the shore, here the dunes are in a fan-shaped pattern. Geologists feel that this occurred due to the waters receding from the south end and creating a pivot-point for the lake-bottom sand deposits. Over the years plants and trees have covered this area, creating an unusual landscape.

During the warmer months the lower areas are wet and marsh-like, but support plant-life and timber, including aspen, white birch, and red maple; the forest floor contains elements which support a variety of vegetation, including spinulose wood fern and yellow-blue-bead-lily.

Out on a circuit from Wautoma to Manitowoc to Two Creeks and back. Earthcaches and WSQ's were the primary targets. This was the first EC of 5 today. Nice fall day for a walk in the woods. TFTC!

Over this way Saturday with Tripoli's EarthCaching Princess.

It is funny, I bet you don't remember, but this isn't the first time that I've tried doing this particular EC. Back when I first met this EarthCache's developer, I tried to visit this special place. But that was way back before auto routing and mapping software, so I couldn't figure out how to get to where I needed to be.

No such problems Saturday...woo hoo!! We took a little time to do some exploring. I gathered the required information and I snapped a few pictures.

Thanks for another cool EarthCache, Anne! :)

Certainly cannot resist an Earthcache! Amazing to imagine that Lake Michigan history included this location. Found some great plants and fungus. TFTEC

We had a blast with this one. We will have to return to take pictures when we have time. We just logged into our GPS and went after this one with out knowing about the info we needed to gather. We encountered a fallen tree on the trail. I'll e-mail to let the owner know about this.

Finally got out to do this earthcache!
Been in this area several times in the past (I like walking the Trillium Trail in the fall), but never knew about this stuff.
Thank you for the awesome geography lesson! :)
