About this Explorer
Giovanni Caboto, more commonly known as John Cabot, was an explorer during the 1400s. His job had always been a merchant and he was used to traveling often. As he grew older, he knew he wanted to go exploring. He was noted as the first explorer to find North America’s main lands.
Historians are not able to gather much information from Giovanni’s earlier life. His birthday was sometime around 1455. His birth place is also unknown, but Genoa, Italy is the most likely place in which he was born. He was given the name of Giovanni, but the English translation of his name is more common. His English name is John Cabot. Caboto means costal seaman or man of the sea and was a common Italian name
Sometime around the early 1470s Cabot moved to Venice, Italy and became a citizen. He then married a woman named Mattea. They had three kids named Ludovico, Sebastiano, and Sancio. John Cabot traveled often, both on and off land. Cabot was eager to go sailing, but nobody would give him the money to do so. Determined, he and his family moved to England in hopes of finding a sponsor. He believed he knew of a route to get to Asia faster for trading purposes.
In the year of 1493, word of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the new world arrived in England. Cabot was able to convince Henry VII to let him go on a voyage. His first attempt happened in 1496. He and his crew left England. On the way, they ran into trouble. They began to argue, have bad weather, become sick, and run out of food. Finally, they all agreed to go back to England.
Cabot’s first real voyage happened one year later in 1497. His ship was named Matthew. Some people conclude that he named it after his wife. On May 2nd, he and his crew set off on the voyage. When they finally saw land, they believed that they were entering East Asia. Most historians have resolved that he landed in the north eastern region of the United States. John Cabot explored around what is now Maine and Canada. He became one of the first explorers to discover North America’s main lands, which is around Canada and northern United States.
Giovanni Caboto’s final voyage took place in between 1498 and 1499. He was traveling in hopes of finding Japan. Cabot took along with him five other ships. Giovanni set off on the journey and never returned home again.
In conclusion, we can assume that Giovanni’s death took place around 1499. He was not an extremely famous explorer, but one who contributed to learning that explorers had discovered new land. He was determined to find a quicker trade route to Asia, but instead ran into two new continents nobody had ever known existed. Giovanni Caboto left the world mysteriously, disappearing on his final voyage.
