Stepono Dariaus ir Stasio Girėno skrydis per Atlanto vandenyną buvo vienas svarbiausių įvykių ne tik Lietuvos, bet ir pasaulio aviacijos istorijoje. Lietuvai jis tapo Tėvynės meilės ir didžiulės pagarbos gimtajam kraštui simboliu, ryžto ir nenuilstamo tikslo siekimo pavyzdžiu. Šis skrydis pasaulio aviacijos istorijoje minimas kaip vienas iš tiksliausių. 1933 m. tai buvo antras rezultatas pasaulyje pagal transatlantinio skridimo nuotolį ir ketvirtas pagal ore išbūtą laiką. Lietuvos karo aviacijos viršininko brg. gen. Antano Gustaičio žodžiais, šio skrydžio pagrindinis bruožas - lakūnų energija ir atkaklus, žūtbūtinis ryžtas nugalėti visas kliūtis ir pasiekti tikslą. Darius su Girėnu buvo ir oro pašto tarnybos iš Šiaurės Amerikos į Europą pradininkai. Išskrisdami iš JAV į Lietuvą, jie vežėsi 983 laiškus ir 5 banderoles su laikraščiu "Naujienos".

Lietuvių pilotai siekė įveikti 7186 km atstumą ir perskristi Atlanto vandenyną nuo Niujorko iki tuometinės Lietuvos sostinės Kauno. Tačiau įveikusi 6411 km atstumą ir be nusileidimo ore išbuvusi 37 val. 11 min. "Lituanica" pateko į audrą, kliudė Soldino miško pušų viršūnes ir sudužo (tuometinės Vokietijos teritorijoje, dabar - Lenkijos, netoli Myslibožo). Abu pilotai tragiškai žuvo, o Kaune apie 25 tūkst. žmonių minia jų taip ir nesulaukė.

2013 m. minint "Lituanicos" skrydžio 80-metį, Kauno įvairių tautų kultūrų centras ir Smile Family įgyvendino projektą, kurio metu buvo sukurtos pirmosios lietuviškos jubiliejinės geo-monetos, pavadintos "Lituanicos" vardu. Šimtas aktyviausių Lietuvos lobių ieškotojų registravo po vieną monetą ir išleido jas į pasaulį taip paskelbdami žinią apie "Lituanicos" pilotų žygdarbį.

The flight of Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas across the Atlantic Ocean was one of the most significant events in the history of both the Lithuanian and world aviation. It became a symbol of love for the Motherland and bottomless respect to the Homeland for all the Lithuanians as well as an example of never-ending determination and resolute pursuit of the set goal. In the history of world aviation, this flight is recorded among the flights of the greatest precision. In 1933, this flight ranked second in the world in terms of the transatlantic distance and fourth in terms of the time the aircraft spent airborne. According to Brigadier General Antanas Gustaitis, Commander of the Lithuanian Air Force, the exclusivity of this flight lied in the pilot’s energy and their strong-willed and do-or-die determination to overcome all obstacles and reach their goal. Darius and Girėnas were also the pioneers of air mail services from North America to Europe. When leaving the USA for their trip to Lithuania, the pilots carried 983 letters and 5 consignments containing the newspaper called Naujienos (the News).

The Lithuanian pilots aimed to fly 7186 km cross the Atlantic Ocean, from New York City to Kaunas, which back then was the capital of Lithuania. However, having spent 37 hours and 11 min airborne and flown as far as 6411, the Lituanica aircraft was caught in a storm. The plane hit the treetops in the Soldin Forest (former German, presently Poland territory, near Myślibórz) and crashed. Both pilots were killed in the accident. The crowd of 25 thousand Kaunas’ residents had been waiting for them in vain.

Kaunas Cultural Centre of Various Nations and Smile Family implemented a project in 2013 to commemorate the 80^th anniversary of the Lituanica flight. During the project, the first Lithuanian anniversary geocoins were released and named Lituanica. A hundred of most active Lithuanian geocachers registered one coin each and let them across the world, this way spreading the message of the heroic deed of the Lituanica’s pilots.

Der Flug von Steponas Darius und Stasys Girenas über den Atlantik war einer der bedeutendsten Ereignisse, nicht nur für das litauischen Land, sondern für die gesamte Luftfahrtgeschichte der ganzen Welt. Für Litauen ist es zu einem Symbol der Liebe zur Heimat geworden und ein großer Respekt für das Geburtsland, ein Beispiel der Entschlossenheit und ein unermüdliches Streben nach dem Ziel. Dieser Flug wird in der Luftfahrtgeschichte der Welt, als einer der genauesten bis dahin durchgeführten Flüge erwähnt. Im Jahr 1933 war dieser Flug der zweite Weltrekord nach der Distanz der transatlantischen Flüge und vierte nach der verbrachten Zeit in der Luft. Laut dem Leiter der litauischen Luftwaffe General Antanas Gustaitis, Eigenartigkeit dieses Fluges war - die Energie und hartnäckige unwiderrufliche Entschlossenheit der Piloten alle Hindernisse zu überwinden und das Ziel zu erreichen. Darius und Girenas waren Pioniere der Luftpost von Nordamerika nach Europa. Bei dem Abflug von USA nach Litauen am Bord der Luftmaschine haben sie 983 Briefe und fünf Pakete/Banderolen mit der Zeitung „Naujienos"(Nachrichten) mitgehabt.

Die litauischen Piloten hatten angestrebt die Strecke von 7186 km zu bewältigen und den Atlantik vom Start in New York bis zum Landeplatz in der damaligen Hauptstadt Litauens, Kaunas ohne eine Zwischenlandung zu überqueren. Aber, nach einer geschafften Entfernung von 6411 km und Aufenthalt in der Luft ohne Unterbrechung von 37 Stunden und 11 Minuten, geriet die „Lituanica“ in ein Gewitter, fiel auf die Spitzen des Kieferwaldes vom Soldini (auf damaligen deutschen Gebiet, jetzt Polen, in der Nähe des Myślibórz) und stürzte ab. Während die über 25 Tausend Landsleute in Kaunas auf ihre Helden warteten, ereignete sich das tragische Unglück und beide Piloten kamen dabei ums Leben und kamen nie in Kaunas an.

Zum Andenken an den Flug der „Lituanica“, an seinem 80. Jahrestag im Jahr 2013, hat das Multinationales Kulturzentrum Kaunas und Smile Family ein Projekt ins Leben gerufen und die ersten litauischen jubiläum Geocoins, namens „Lituanica“, eingeführt. Einhundert Aktivisten der litauischen Geocachers haben je einen Geocoin registriert und in die Welt zum freien Umlauf gegeben, und somit die Botschaft über die Heldentat der Piloten der „Lituanica“ verkündet.
