I am now ready to make my way back to Wimbledon Common in London, England.
Wombles are small furry creatures with long noses that live in an underground burrow on Wimbledon Common, London. The burrow is a strange place, as it has a drawbridge for a front door, the walls are lined with newspaper and everything inside has been made out of rubbish. This is because Wombles go out on to the Common, with large bags, looking for rubbish that people have thrown away. They are very environmentally friendly and love recycling things. The Wombles were created by Elisabeth Beresford and the first Wombles book was published in 1968. They appeared long before recycling and environmental concerns became an issue and they captured the hearts of children and adults and have become part of British folklore. My name is Tobermory. I am in charge of the workshop where I make all kinds of clever and useful gadgets with all the things we find. I used to be in the Navy.
