This is a member of my first set of trackables that our family is releasing. We would like them to travel place to place and generally pick up stories and pictures from other geocachers along the way.
Our family named the bear after the constellation in the northern sky. We chose the name Ursa Minor because the name is Latin for Little Bear.
Ursa Minor is a small wooden brown bear.
The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is a large bear distributed across much of northern Eurasia and North America. It can weigh 780 kilograms (660 to 1,700 lb) and its largest subspecies, the Kodiak Bear, rivals the polar bear as the largest member of the bear family and as the largest land-based predator.
Ursa Minor (Latin: "Smaller Bear", contrasting with Ursa Major), also known as the Little Bear, is a constellation in the northern sky. Like the Great Bear, the tail of the Little Bear may also be seen as the handle of a ladle, whence the name Little Dipper. It was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy, and remains one of the 88 modern constellations. Ursa Minor is notable as the location of the north celestial pole.
