About This Item

coins 396crsm

This coin is being sent out to raise awareness of bikes on the road! Please remember that we on the motorcycles (or even the pedal bikes) have just as much right as anyone else, but MUCH less protection! Please check your mirrors before changing lanes, look both ways and pay closer attention when making a turn onto or off of a roadway, we might be there! It only takes one hurried move, one careless push of the gas. When you begin to pull out, if we are coming and see you, we must make a split-second decision...that decision could be life or death! Tod didn't hit anyone, the truck stopped before pulling all the way into his lane...this didn't matter as Tod had already committed himself to braking. Once committed, there's no way to stop the chain of events which will follow. Please don't make us commit, watch for us and help protect us as we travel.

In loving memory of Todie Phillips! Tod, 1/3 of Team Rod & Tod w/KAboom was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident when a motorist pulled into his lane unexpectedly. Tod (as we have surmised) likely locked his brakes and skidded sideways until he perceived he was safe to disengage the brake and resume. Unfortunately, when in a skid, bikes usually tend to skip if the brake is released (as I learned at the funeral services). Tod likely released the brake (just a speculation), the bike jumped and then grabbed before flipping several times...Tod rode it to the end! This accident was needless, the driver merely needed look and would have seen Tod there. This usually happens because of people being in a hurry. PLEASE take your time and help us arrive safely! PLEASE keep this coin moving to help spread the word of bike awareness!!

I was a lucky one too, twice. The first time I hit a deer at 65 mph, destroyed my fairing, $2,200 damage to bike - and that was in '85. I suffered a sprained ancle and a few very moinr road burns - could have been a lot worse. Second time, same bike, some older guy look right through me and proceeded to drive me off the road into a field. I don't believe he ever really saw me. he sure didn't stop to check on me. Other then a lot of dust, no probelms. Key to survivakl on a bike - be always alert, and assume the other guy (or animal) doesn't see you.

I am sorry for your loss, will take some pictures here in San Diego, then get this little guy moving to spread the word. Thanks !

Can't remember exactly which cache we found this one in but it wasn't in "Todies Wild Ride." Anyway... sorry you have to get the word out this way. Personnaly I consider myself a three time Lucky Rider.
The first was when I was deliberately forced out of the center lane by two teenage boys directly into the back of a stopped pick-up at 70mph. The only thing that saved me was the helmet which took full impact and literally split in half. (and no... the teenagers did not stop!)
The second was when by bike was stolen and my co-worker drove me home that night. On my exit was a motorcyclist, down in the road, who had slipped in the wet turn because of a misdirected water sprinkler. His helmet still clipped to the back of his bike. (I believe God allowed my bike to be taken because I was too stupid to wear my helmet. This was before it was law.) I took it as a sign and stopped riding for about 20 years.
Finally, as gas prices started rising and my wife stated SHE should get a bike, I took up the adventure again. This time a little more mature and taking motorcycle safety courses. Three years lated (this July) I am forced into another lane by a lady on a cell (hummm, there's a law about that too) and again, I come out of it because of my helmet. This time however, I am required to visit the Doc at a local ER.
I am truely sorry to hear about your friend and consider myself extreamely luck. I will never again ride a bike.
