Retrieve It from a Cache 3/26/2024 Nilpferd retrieved it from Die Maiwand (1135 m) Bayern, Germany   Visit Log

With a height of 1135m above sea level Mt. Maiwand is really not particularly high, but the ascent is quite challenging.
For this reason, here even after about 6 weeks the STF was still possible.
And the descent into the valley was also abnormally.
It was not dangerous, but a huge mess. Heavy vehicles had driven here after forestry work and left a trail of devastation.
After the rain of the past few days, the path was very, very muddy.

  • The steep ascent to Mt. Maiwand
  • The summit is not far away anymore. You can already see the cross at the summit a little to the left of the center of the picture
  • At the summit
  • View to the valley of River Inn
  • The church of St. Peter
  • From here it got a bit muddy ...
  • ... and later on it even got more muddy

We already have climbed Mt. Laber near Oberammergau several times, but since last year there is a new cache up there. Unfortunately, it's a multi cache, but Nilpferd preferred to take a different (steeper) route to the summit, which doesn't pass any of the 10 stages.
But with knowledge of the area and a little mathematics, the coordinates could be determined at home and the checker was green immediately.
There wasn't much snow on the ascent and we were optimistic that we could find the cache. However, when we reached the destination, we stood in front of a large snowfield. At least half a meter of snow and no indication where the cache might be.
As the owner is not known for precise coordinates, we didn't even try to dig out the cache and took our lunch break on the bench nearby.
After all, there was another cache on the descent, and so we finally found a cache today.

  • Oberammergau
  • Ettal Monastery

After we got stuck in the snow a few days ago and didn't reach our destination, today we only went to the absolutely snow-free flatlands near Lake Ammersee.
There is a canyon where the path was partly destroyed by a flood in 2021 and the municipal administration apparently has no interest (or no money) to rebuild the path, but there are still 2 old caches (one of them was hidden in 2002) in the canyon.
So today we walked over slippery paths, fallen trees and broken bridges to a 16m high waterfall at the end of the canyon.
And there was also a lost place, a former water mill, to explore along the way.
An interesting hike even without any significant elevation gain.

  • Lost place: The old mill
  • Water wheel in the lost place
  • Fallen trees over the path
  • This bridge is no longer in good condition
  • Waterfall at the end of the canyon
  • Hochschloss Castle

It's winter again!
Even in Nilpferd's yard there was snow a few days ago, but only a few millimeters.
Many years ago, Nilpferd had already been at the cache on Mt. Grasköpfl in the Karwendel Mountains.
The cache at the summit is available for winter, but we weren't sure whether we would even be able to reach the summit due to the snow.
It started well: After the cold night, the snow was hard and it was easy to walk on, even in the upper part the path was no longer visible under the snow. But when we reached an altitude of 1400m and got into the sun, it became very demanding. We repeatedly sank deep into the soaked, wet snow and about 250 meters below the summit we finally capitulated.
The following slope to be traversed, with a hillside angle of at least 30°, would have a risk of avalanches because of all the wet snow.
In order to find at least one cache today, we looked for a cache directly at the parking lot.
It was supposedly a great "viewpoint" but we saw only a dry streambed. That was a bit disappointing because we had much better viewponts during our hike.

  • It's winter again in the Karwendel Mountains
  • Ascent in the snow
  • The path is no longer visible
  • It’s a bit exhausting in the deep wet snow
  • Mt. Schafreuter (2102m)
  • Nilpferd is stuck in the snow

Although Nilpferd lives in this area for almost 40 years and hikes al lot in the mountains, there are still summits that he has not climbed yet.
Today we took an old path up to Mt. Bockstein, very close to the well-known Mt. Wendelstein, which can be reached by cable car and cog railroad. Therefore always a lot of people are there.
We however didn't meet anyone else at the summit of Mt. Bockstein and because it was so warm, we had a long nap.
On the north-facing descent, we were able to slide down a snowy slope and just before the parking lot, there was a cache at a waterfall.
Before it is supposed to rain again tomorrow, we really enjoyed this day.

  • Mt. Wendelstein
  • Nap at the summit
  • Waterfall
