This Travel bug is dedicated to Pope John Paul II one of the most beloved popes and by far the most traveled pope in history. Fun Pope Facts: • Born: May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland Birth name: Karol Joseph Wojtyla (voy-tee-wah); renamed John Paul II when he took the office of pope in 1978. • Died: April 2, 2005. John Paul served as pope for over 26 years; the second-longest documented pontificate in history • He was fluent in eight different languages. • As Pope, JP II visited 129 countries and every continent but Antarctica, he is the most traveled pope in history. • In 1981, he was shot in St. Peter's square by Turkish national Mehmet Ali Agca; later JP II visited him in prison and publicly forgave him. • Time Magazine declared him 1994 "Man of the Year". • He authorized the current Catechism of the Catholic Church, the first complete systematic synthesis of faith issued since the Council of Trent in 1566. • Oh, by the way, he is now officially a Saint!
