Turtles live all over the world. They can be found throughout the temperate and tropical regions of the world, including the major seas. Turtles live in lakes, ponds, salt marshes, rivers, forests, and even in deserts. Some spend most of the time in water like oceans, lakes, and rivers. Others are semi-aquatic and spend time in water and on land like in bogs, swamps, marshes, and the wetlands. Still other turtles spend all their time on land.
The mission of this Sea Turtle Cachekinz is to travel to places all over the world where turtles are found. Drop him in caches that are hidden in woods where turtles nest, or by the ocean where they swim. Anywhere a turtle may be found is where this guy would like to go.
In 2013, Cache Your Way Across McHenry County (IL) focused on teaching cachers about turtles and their habitats. This turtle trackable is a tribute to our summer long hunt for the CYW turtle facts.
Speaking of facts here are few: Two hundred and fifty species of turtles live in our world. The bog or mud turtles grow no larger than 4 inches long. The sea-roving turtles are more than 6.5 feet in length and weigh more than 1,100 pounds. The alligator snappers of the southeastern United States reach weights of more than 110 pounds. They are among the largest freshwater turtles.
