Designed especially for the GHAGAFAP IX event, Sept. 18, 2010 in Rockwood, Ontario, Canada!
This old token dates from the 1800's and therefore, makes a great "time travel" piece...let's see how far and long it can go via the geocacher chain!..another 156 years, maybe???? Value is low: only about $5.00 so please, pass it on!
Commemorating our love of antiques... An 1854 Upper Canada One Penny Bank Token.
Obverse side displays St. George slaying the dragon. On the ground line, RK & CO.[Rowe, Kentish, & Co.] Around, BANK OF UPPER CANADA. Reverse: The old arms of Upper Canada, which seems to have incorporated two cornucopiae, a sword, an anchor, a wreath, an arrow, and a tomahawk / peace pipe. Above, a crown; to the right, a portion of a flag. These were struck at Heaton's Mint, in Birmingham, England. Many were never circulated and were eventually melted for bullion. The coins of Upper Canada are very popular with collectors of British Empire coins, not only those of Canada (but note this one is not high in monentary value). The 1857 issue is quite difficult to find. The pieces have been given the affectionate nickname of "St. George Pieces", because of the obverse design. Only worth about $5.00 CND so please this is not really workth keeping!!
