Current Goal

Well I will leave it to not2shabby to tell the tale about why my folks still talk about dad going to help the lady find one of my geocaches. She gave them such a kick that day. And she still comes back to find my new caches even after that experience.

About This Item

You cannot buy this coin. You cannot trade for it. The only way to own one of these coins is for Blue Canary to deem you worthy and to "gift" it to you.

The obverse of the coin has the logo of Blue Canary, who has been geocaching since February 21, 2003. A blue canary is a term used only half in jest by firemen in referring to law enforcement officers at a hazardous materials incident. Unfortunately, Hazmat training for law enforcement has lagged behind that of fire fighters. Law enforcement is usually trained to rush immediately to any incident they are called to. Fire fighters have been trained to observe the area as they approach. Only half jokingly fire fighters are taught in responding to hazardous material incidents to observe any law enforcement officers already on the scene to see if the "Blue Canaries" appear OK or are prone on the ground. Blue Canary is a retired law enforcement officer. Also in the border of the coin are the Eagle Scout badge and the square and compass of the Masons, both of which Blue Canary is proud to be.

The reverse side shows a camp scene. Another one of Blue Canary's hobbies is buckskinning, also called mountain man or longhunter. This is basically camping using only equipment that was available prior to 1840. Camps, called rendezvous, are held at various locations around the United States throughout the year. The sky represents two astronomical events, an eclipse and a comet, that occured during the same rendezvous Blue Canary was at several years ago.

Grab It (Not from a Cache) 5/13/2007 not2shabby grabbed it   Visit Log

What a nice surprise to be able to grab and adopt this coin! I always enjoy Blue Canary's caches for being unique and fun, as he is.

The story is that I had taken a "shortcut" through the woods from another cache and had ended up hot, tired, and bleeding from bushwacking. I wandered around on the hill for awhile looking for the cache and then noticed a pickup pulling up close to my jeep. Whether I was worried about my jeep or myself, I immediately headed down the hill and through the woods to check.

It was Blue Canary's parents, who had been watching me from the comfort of their front porch and had come to offer some help. Much needed help, I might add. I took a different approach on their advice and had the cache quickly.

The moral of the story is that you never know when someone might be watching you, so instead of throwing a fit and crying or banging your head against a tree, just gracefully leave the scene and come back another day. I know - hard to do when one is hot, tired, and bleeding.

Thanks, BC, you're my huckleberry!
