Current GOAL: To visit Ms. Deyenberg's 5th Grade Class at Dorothy Dalgliesh School in Picture Butte, Alberta, Canada. I hope to travel to Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, the nearest large town. My owners (elemitrt and mswecker) are twitter friends of Ms. Deyenberg!

About this item:
I am being followed and mapped by elementary students in Roanoke County and Salem City schools, Virginia, US. Please take lots of pictures of me along the way!! Thanks for helping me visit my friends in Canada! My name comes from the original name for Roanoke, VA (my starting place) -- Big Lick. When the Roanoke Valley was first settled, there were many salt marshes nearby where buffalo, elk, and deer gathered, and so did the Native Americans who hunted them. These salt marshes were also called licks, so the name for the first village in the area was "Big Lick." Later the name was changed to "Roanoke" after the Roanoke River. The name Roanoke came from the Native American word "Rawrenock" which were shells that Native Americans would wear and trade for goods.

The Kentucky Jedi's Geocaching team decided to do our first bit of hiking since moving to Roanoke a couple weeks ago. We'll do our best to move this travel bug a little farther north in the next couple weeks. Great idea for school fun. We'll take a picture or two on the way.
