About This Item

Scorpius the Scorpion

Scorpius is a constellation in the night sky and is one of the oldest known. An asterism of a gigantic skewed "S" was seen in many ancient cultures as a scorpion, possibly handed down by cultural conquest or influence. It really does resemble the nasty little bug!

Scorpius the Scorpion can be seen in during the summer in the Northern Hemisphere. It's on the ecliptic so it's pretty close to the horizon for those in the far north or south. Find a nice flat horizon and maybe a hilltop to see Scorpius if you live above or below about 42 degrees latitude.

Two stars at the eastern tip are both called "The Sting" in Arabic, traditionally form the stinger. The claws are at the eastern tip and form giant fan shape from the very bright star Antares.

According to Greek mythology, Scorpius is the beast which finally killed the Great Hunter, Orion. Orion is one of the most recognizable constellations in the sky, best visible in Winter.

Log if you can find Scorpius in the night sky!
