Current Goal

I would like this TB to fly as far and wide as possible in remembrance of the lost aircrew of 101 Sqn RAF. It would be good if it went to Sweden at some point.

About This Item

TB "Oor Wullie"

This Travel Bug is dedicated to the men of 101 Sqn RAF that flew from RAF Ludford Magna from June 1943 to August 1945. The squadron flew Avro Lancasters on hazardous night bomber operations into heavily defended enemy territory. 740 of these brave young men, some only teenagers, never returned home and 96 of them have no known graves. In particular I would like to mention Lancaster SR-W, LL757 flown by Rusty Waughman. He and his crew survived their tour of 30 missions. (Please read “Carried on the wind” by Sean Feast ISBN 1-903953-45-6) One of the best known Sqn nose paintings was on this Lancaster SR-W, with a painting of the Scottish cartoon character Oor Wullie. The artist was Cpl Willie Steadman. FLT/LT William Stewart and his crew took over “Oor Wullie” after Rusty. On 30 August 1944 Bomber Command mounted a heavy attack on the ports of Stettin and Königsberg. 402 Lancasters took part in the raid, and 38 were lost, “Oor Wullie” being one of them. Shot down by a night fighter over Sweden, all lives lost. To this day  there is a small peaceful pond in a forest on the outskirts of Östra Ljungby, Sweden, (Cache GC2GNOW) made by the impact of one of the bombs. MAY THEY REST IN PEACE. Their Courage and bravery will not be forgotten. Please keep this Bomber flying so I can update my Grandad "Oor Wullie Steadman" of its progress.

"I know that I shall meet my fate somewhere in the clouds above, those that I fight I do not hate, ...." William Butler Yeats.

Copy of letter from grieving parents to grieving parents of crew of, "Oor Wullie".

11 December, 1946

Dear Mr. and Mrs Swanson,

We are strangers writing to strangers, but there is a set link which binds us, such as we are unknown to each other.

Our only child, the late Henry George Popper, was one of the members of the crew with your late dear son.

The nine boys who gave their lives for the freedom of mankind were, as you know, all picked up and buried in Sweden; each having a grave to himself. On the second anniversary of their earthly departure we went to Sweden. Accompanied by the English Vice-Consul we visited their graves in Helsingborg. We put gladioli in English colours on the graves of the brave boys. A soft silent wind and a heavy summery rain spoke benediction over them.

We thought it might be of comfort to you to know that two of the parents, who felt the same for all the boys, stood on their graves on the anniversary of the day they left us.

The graves are beautifully kept with roses planted on them, but up to now there are only wooden crosses to tell the world the names of the boys who went over to the eternal life that others might stay longer here.

We know that you, with us, will think of your boy a lot at this coming Christmas time and it might be that this letter will mean a greeting to you from your badly missed boy.

Yours truly,

Mr. and Mrs. Popper
