Current Goal

Hi,
I'm Magnus the Viking. I've come to Knoydart in Scotland in search of my ancestors and whilst I'm here, my mission, should you wish to accept it, is to bag as many Munros as possible! If you are going to climb a Munro, please take me with you and photograph me at the summit! When I've done as many as possible my beard will probably have grown down to the ground so would someone please return me to the K10 cache in Knoydart so I can find my way back home again. Thank you.

Magnus at the LAMM Part 2

Up at 5am to a bright & clear but cold Sunday morning. Magnus helped with the start of Day 2, and then hitched a lift in the equipment van back to the event centre to help at the finish.

Monday there were still controls to be collected in. Magnus was allocated one high on Sgurr Nan Ceathreamhnan (everyone else confused him by calling it Chrysanthemum!). It was a long walk but gave an opportunity to bag another Munro so Magnus was really keen to get going. Fortunately it was another sunny day, just a few showers about now and then. Magnus stayed for quite a while on the summit, admiring the views and contemplating the challenge ahead. To the West he could see the Cuillin, also Rum, Eigg and Muck. To the South there were of course all the Sheil Munros, beyond there Ben Nevis and the Grey Corries, and further beyond some more mountains which must have been the Mamores. The East was, of course, dominated by Carn Eighe and Mam Sodhail, with Craig Meagaidh in the SE, and beyond that a faint blur which might have been the Cairngorms. To the North he could pick out Maoile Lunndaidh, the Torridons and the Fannaichs. It looked as if An Teallach and Fisherfield were having a storm.

Work done, it was time to head back the way he had come. Magnus took it slowly, stopping now and then to admire the Scottish mountain flora. Climbing back up to Bealach an Sgairne was hard work for tired legs, but at least it was all downhill from there.

Magnus at the LAMM Part 1

Magnus started his Munro-bagging career at the Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon at the weekend. The race was held in Kintail this year, with competitors arriving at Morvich on the Friday night before heading out into the hills on Saturday morning for two days of mountain navigation.

Magnus was not a competitor, he was a part of the race organising team. Friday afternoon and evening was spent in the marquee at registration, which closed at midnight. Six am Saturday morning saw Magnus herding the competitors onto busses to the start. Only one team slipped by onto the wrong bus! From 11am Magnus had some free time, and so elected to walk to the overnight camp: this enabled him to take in his first Munro, A Ghlas Bheinn, and the Glomach Falls geocache. The walk started easily enough, up a pleasantly wooded valley. But eventually he had to leave the track and boy was the climb onto the ridge steep! Once on the ridge, it was an easy scramble to the top. Although most of the day had been sunny, as soon as he arrived at the summit it clouded over and started raining. There was just time for a quick photo shoot and to don some waterproofs before heading down the mountain to the north.

The next stop was the Glomach Falls geocache. The cache itself was an easy find above the falls. The falls are truly awesome! The pictures don’t do them justice, you really need to see them for yourself. It’s a good thing Magnus has a good head for heights as he was right on the edge for the photo shoot!

Then it was on to the overnight camp for some food and a well-earned rest.

  • Magnus studies the map Finding the best route is a key part of mountain marathoning. Good thing Magnus loves map-reading!
  • Magnus on A Ghlas Beinn The only time he had rain all day. Shame it spoiled the view.
  • Magnus at Glomach Falls
  • Bath Time! This looked like a good spot for a dip.
On the approach to the overnight camp some competitors could be seen bathing in the loch. Rumour has it they were skinny-dipping. Magnus' eyesight wasn't good enough to tell. Just as well!

Alas when I picked up Magnus I was at the end of a Munro-bagging trip on Knoydart. Now he is in Lancashire, where there is a dearth of Munros.

However, I shall be returning to Scotland in June, for another Munro-bagging trip, so if you don't mind I shall keep him until then.

In the meantime he may get the chance to visit some Cumbrian mountains.
