About This Item

"O Almeida" was a runner on "Buga?" The 1st Portuguese Travelbug Race Geocaching@PT. The edition was dedicated to "Calçada Portuguesa", a very typical kind of pavement of the streets and villages of Portugal. See some photos here.

This TB grabbed 2nd place overall. A very good performance! This could only be possible due to the dedication and effort from several geocachers, such as:
NCortes, smrich, GerIRL, fdsanders, Gorgonzola Faction, slackjawedyokel, AlFran, MAX-X and Prying Pandora. Thank you all. You've helped "O Almeida" to run 7435miles!

"O Almeida" has now another mission! Please, try to help him out to reach our cache Walk in the Park [Lisboa] - GCRH8W, in Portugal.

The pavement is built with hundreds or even thousand of little cubic stones. The black ones are usually basalt and the white ones limestones. In Portugal, this form of urban art slowly gets what it deserves. Usually, people just step on it, but times are changing and now it's almost a luxury to have "Calçada à Portuguesa" in some houses or streets. If you visit Portugal, please take sometime to look also at the floor. You'll be suprised!

This Travelbug is also a tribute to someone that "preserves" and cleans the "Calçada à Portuguesa". The "Almeida" is commonly known as the person who cleans the streets of Lisbon, Portugal, and also some other portuguese cities. Calderon Dinis, author of "Tipos e Factos da Lisboa do Meu Tempo (1900-1974)" wrote that these men were nicknamed this way due to the majority of them (at least the first) were all from Almeida, a village in Portugal. These men had and still have, the hard work of putting the streets clean. As you can probably imagine, it's not an easy work, especially when you only have a broom, much like this TB, but bigger, of course!

So, here's our little tribute to them. Hope you can help him in the race. Thank you!
