Every finder of the Higgs should guess its weight -
this can later (>=2008) be compared with the result of the LHC
experiments at the particle physics research center CERN. Current
estimates of scientists are between 117 and 251 GeV, which is actually
not very much for our every day's life, but not too bad for a single elementary particle.
Many physicists all over the world are excitedly waiting for the
discovery of the Higgs, and the particle accelerator which first sees it
will certainly write scientific history. Please help those desperate
people, and bring the Higgs to (or the vicinity of, or at least in the
direction of) a particle accelerator of your choice!
Pictures and stories along its way highly welcome!
The Higgs is a (still hypothetical) elementary particle
which is predicted within the Standard Model of particle physics to
explain all other particles' masses. It is the last missing piece in a
puzzle which fits together with astonishing precision - or it turns out
that the universe once more is more complicated than we all thought. Or
will be, if Douglas Adams is right ("There is a theory which states that
if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is
here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more
bizarre and inexplicable.").
