The
Blown Away Tribute Ducky is winging its way to locations of hope, redemption, and rebuilding in order to highlight and collect examples of
BEAUTY and
BRAVERY in the midst of Destruction and Desolation.
This ducky was created by UU Jester of Team-Ducky as a tribute to an old friend and former co-worker, Tanya Mikulas, and her artwork.
In April of 2011, Tanya's neighborhood, Forest Lake in Tuscaloosa, AL, was devastated by an F5 Tornado. Many people evacuated. Tanya stuck around...slowly but surely rebuilding her home while also tending to the local animals who were also among the newly homeless. Surrounded by destruction and devastation, it would have been easy to give in to despair. Instead, Tanya, walked the neighborhood finding beauty and evidence of new life. She documented her experiences with words and photos on her blog, ScalePhotography.com
One of Tanya's photos was chosen by the community to represent the rebuilding process. Then Tanya got the idea of creating an art installation of her photos, bringing her pictures of hope to a wider audience. She started a Kickstarter project to help fund the supplies she would need. Tanya was suprised at how quickly she reached her modest funding goal. (We were not.) The level of support Tanya has received has allowed her to create a book of her photos, entitled "Blown Away...the book."
Unitarian minister, William Ellery Channing, wrote, “Even in evil, that dark cloud which hangs over the creation, we discern rays of light and hope, and gradually come to see in suffering and temptation proofs and instruments of the sublimest purposes of wisdom and love.”
