This coin is on a mission to go to HI. My Uncle loved HI and wanted to go back, but did not get to return during a time of peace. Please photograph the coin on its journey, and in HI, and then send it back to home to Maine where he is at rest. Thank you.
He was a He The coThis coin is in remembrance of my Uncle Laurie, a WWII Veteran and Death March of Bataan survivor, who passed away on 12/08/10. He was a wonderful man and served our country for many years. He was born on 11/16/1919 in Lewiston, ME. He worked in the CCC during his teen years, He joined the US Army at age 17 and was stationed in GA and HI before being transferred to the Philippines. When US troops surrendered to the Japanese in 4/42, my uncle was taken prisoner until the end of the war in Aug. 1945. He survived the Bataan-Corredgidor Death March, The Hell Ships and slave labor. While a prisoner, he was required to build a harbor, mine copper and cut timber. Conditions the prisoners were kept in were horrific. After the war, my uncle transferred to the Air Force and became a recruiter. He was married for 53 years and had 3 children. He served 31 yrs in the armed forces, and 15 years as a postal carrier for the USPS in Trenton NJ. Once retired, he and his wife Pauline moved back to ME, where they had lived when at Dow AFB during the 50's and 60's. Laurent was an active volunteer with several local veterans groups and an avid Bingo player and caller. He was a lifetime member of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Ex=Prisoners of War, the American Legion and the National Association of Letter Carriers. He was awarded many medals, including the Purple Heart. I used to take my Uncle to be in the Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, and Fourth of July parades. He needed help to participate, so I was privileged to ride in the WWII bus with the vets during these parades, for over a decade. It was an honor to help him, and to see his joy, waving his hand and his WWII cane to the parade attendees, and watching him salute other service members and the crowd. He was buried on Dec 13, 2010 with military honors at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Aug. ME. In honor of Laurent L. Martel and the recent Memorial Day, please help fulfill his wish and get this coin to HI and back to ME, where he rests.
