About This Item

West Union, Iowa - Deeply Connected

This geocoin commemorates and celebrates an ambitious project by the community of West Union, Iowa located in the beautiful Northeast corner of our state.  Our town became a Main Street Community in 2006, was selected as a Green Pilot Community in 2008 and was named an Iowa Great Place in 2009!

Our project is a downtown Green Streetscape Project incorporating porous pavers for our sidewalks and streets, rain gardens, bioswales and implementing a district wide geothermal system.  By incorporating these green components, it our hope to better manage storm water runoff as well as utilizing effective energy solutions for our downtown community.

Our motto, "Deeply Connected" reflects our quality of life values of being connected to our agricultural history, our strong sense of community and our commitment to our past, present and vision for the future!

We broke ground October 2010 and plan to complete the renovation by 2012.

First, PaLoon is an Iowanian from the central portion of the state. Second, we loons have a daughter who lives in a small community in England where green streetscaping is the rule. Wish we had more efforts going into this idea here in North Carolina. Paving over paradise does seem to generate lots more issues with flooding locally and then people wonder why. Thanks for sharing the message with this coin. Hope it continues to travel well.
