About This Item

The Regent Honeyeater (Xanthomyza Phrygia) is one of Australia’s most endangered birds, with only about 4-500 left in the wild. One of their last strongholds is the forests around Chiltern in North-Eastern Victoria, especially Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park. Every 2 years 70-80 captive bred birds are released in the Park and tracked by volunteers for up to 6 months as they acclimatise and start to nest and breed.

You can read more about  this beautiful bird and the efforts to rescue it from extinction at http://www.birdlife.org/datazone/speciesfactsheet.php?id=5374 .

Chiltern is a small village on the main road and rail lines between Melbourne and Sydney just west of the major centre of Albury-Wodonga. The forests around Chiltern are home to many interesting and rare species of plants and animals, in particular birds – perching birds are attracted by nectar-bearing eucalypts and waterbirds use the many man-made lakes and ponds in the are, left over from the gold-mining days of the C19.

Chiltern attracts tourists who come to see the natural attractions and also the well-preserved gold era buildings and the many cafes and  boutique stores. More information about Chiltern at http://www.chilternvic.com/ .

As an avid birdwatcher from the Blue Mountains in NSW this was a great TB to pick up from Cybergran V. I have seen the Regent Honeyeaters a couple of times in the Capertee Valley. My birdwatching cousin gave me the Regent Honeyeater Pin just recently. 🐥
