Mercator Antique Silver

Mercator, souvent appelé Gérard Mercator en français, de son vrai nom Gérard de Cremere ou Kremer, (5 mars 1512 à Rupelmonde - 2 décembre 1594 à Duisbourg), est un mathématicien et géographe belge.

Mercator est à l'origine de la première projection du globe pour les navigateurs qui révolutionna la cartographie. Mathématicien et géographe d'ascendance allemande, Mercator fait ses études à l’Université de Louvain en 1530 sous la direction de l’astronome Frisius qui l’initie à la construction et représentation du globe. En 1538, il fait paraître sa première carte du monde après celle de la Terre Sainte, sortie l'année précédente. À partir de 1552, il accepte la chaire de cosmographie à l'université de Duisburg et travaille à l’élaboration d’une projection de la Terre qui le conduit à publier en 1569, les 18 feuilles de « La projection de Mercator » qui fournit enfin aux navigateurs une réelle description des contours des terres.
