Note for the owners of the CACHE-ART-02:
Hello to the people of Hof, Germany.
We received this Travel Bug camera at a geo-cacher’s convention on the island of Palma in the Mediterranean. We have brought this camera back to Canada with us to take a photograph and then drop it off in another cache. We decided to take a picture of Gander International Airport because this is a place that a lot of German’s are familiar with.
On September 11th 2001 while the terrorist attacks where taking place in The United States of America all of the airplanes that were in the air were ordered to land at the closest airport. Gander was the first available stop to many aircraft that were flying across the ocean, and many airplanes landed there, doubling the town's population in hours. There were not enough hotel rooms to accommodate all of the passengers so the people of Gander opened up their homes to many stranded travellers for the weeks following the attack. As a gesture of gratitude one of your airlines, Lufthansa, has actually named one of their airplanes “Gander” after the town that cared for so many of your people.
It was an overcast day in the spring (April 18) when I took this photograph… there is still a little snow remaining on the ground in places. There is a Comorant helicopter just about to land, having just completed some local training. The helicopter is a part of the search and rescue squadron that operates from Gander – and they are responsible for saving the lives of many people over the years.
This is one of the most unique travel bugs that we have seen and we hope that your camera makes the remainder of its journey quickly and safely.
Regards,
Your friends in Canada
