Current Goal

To visit weather stations, forecast offices, research labs, storm spotters and chasers up and down Tornado Alley. Take me to a Skywarn refresher class each year, go on a storm chase or two, show me some big hailstones and examples of nature's fury. But I don't do travel bug hotels.

About This Item

Tornado Alley

Tornado Alley is a Skywarn spotter's patch with a reinforcing plate so he won't blow away as easily.

Yet another adventure, still in the Permian Basin. Several supercells along the dryline, with tennis ball sized hail in Dawson County, a tornado reported on the ground in Pecos County, multiple simultaneous wall cloud sightings in Martin County.
Someone got some video.

  • Storm Warning Flags at NOAA station hang limply at half mast in honor of Ronald Reagan, buried yesterday, while nature's fury brews a county away. MAF is responsible for 26 counties in West Texas and southeastern New Mexico, the largest geographic region in the nation. The area of responsibility spans more than 300 miles northeast to southwest.

Was going to release him 3 months ago at the end of a storm chase, but have been busy with net control, and forgot the swag bag during the one good road trip.

Spent the whole evening at the MAF (Midland TX) weather service with owner running a Skywarn net (W5MAF). Tornado warnings in Upton County, landspouts in several counties with pulse thunderstorms. Finally got done about 2:30 AM.

  • W5MAF station Various radios, maps, log sheets, radar displays, computers to keep spotters safe and also where they can see something.
