Here is my story from the first day of the fires:
I was out in the desert for the weekend enjoying a good time with fellow cachers at The Anza-Borrego Desert Cache Tour. We got up early on Sunday morning and a group of us did the strenuous climb up to Ruscal's Campout Boulderdash cache. After that, we did a few caches around the Blair Valley area before our planned morning departure. As we were driving around the area, we started seeing smoke coming up over the mountains to the West.
Then, we started getting the radio reports of how wide spread the fires were. At one point, we met up with the Slabyfam and they gave us an update based on what they were getting on the ham radio. From the reports, it seemed that most of the routes out of Borrego, going West were closed. At that point, fkrexcal and I decided to head back to camp, get packed up and head out. We drove past Lake Henshaw and down 76 to the 15. We were fortunate because the fire was burning near 76 coming from Valley Center, but they had not closed the road yet.
The bad news hit after we arrived home safely. A couple of our fellow geocachers, including one who was with us in the desert, lost their homes in the fire.
