About This Item

Daughter of Loke and a jotun woman by the name of Angerboda . Sister of Midgardsormen and Fenrisulven. Hel is the ruler of the world of the dead. After that the Gods have read signs saying that these three would bring at lot of misery, they brought them to Åsgard. Odin threw Hel down to Nivlheim and gave her the power over nine worlds, and all that dies from illness or old age ends up there.
Hel is also the name of her kingdom, a gloomy mirror of earthly life. It is possible to die in Hel, then one is sent to Nivlhel, which is dark and misty and situated deep below the first.
Hel is a ugly sight, half blue black and half white, and very fierce-looking and peevish. The dog Garm is leashed under Gnipahelleren and guards Helgrinden, which is the entrance to the word of the dead.
Hel's home is called Eljudne(the rain wet), the threshold one passes is called Fallende Fare, and Sykeleie (Sick-bed) is her bed. Her plate is Hunger and Sult (starvation) is her knife. She has a slave named Ganglate and a slave woman named Ganglat.
