Uilen horen niet bij de roofvogels, zoals dat vroeger wel werd beweerd. Daarvoor zijn er teveel verschillen tussen beide vogelgroepen. Uilen zijn dan ook niet langer 'nachtroofvogels', maar gewoon 'uilen'. Niet alle uilen jagen trouwens in het duister. De velduil jaagt graag overdag en ook de steenuil doet dat regelmatig. In Nederland is met name de kerkuil (Tyto alba) een nachtjager. Alleen tijdens voedselschaarste en tijdens strenge winters jaagt hij overdag. Hij moet dan wel!
