About This Item
In 1957, a group of scientists at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, MD, were listening to the signal of the recently launched Soviet satellite SPUTNIK. By measuring the Doppler shift of the signal as the satellite passed overhead, and knowing where they were located on the Earth, they were able to locate and track the satellite. Then, thinking out of the box, they decided that if they knew where the satellite was, they could calculate their position anywhere on Earth. That was the beginning of the satellite navigation program and APL is still active in it today.

Found in Whittier, NC, just outside of a graveyard (near my great-grandfather's resting place), gonna move it on down the road soon. This one's getting some serious mileage!

I really wanted to leave this in Boston. I had a couple caches in mind too. I dropped off a travel bug at Fort Point Cable Crossing and I wanted to drop this off at another location. I failed. So, I marked this coin's travel to Boston and will select a nice new resting spot for it in Cary.

Very nice coin. It has some good heft. The kids love the coins and the travel bugs. I will send this on very soon. I am going up to Boston next week. Maybe I will wait and send this along then.

Picked this coin up a while ago with the intent of moving it to Romania. Unfortunately that trip was cancelled... I have brought it with me to North Carolina though and just heading out to release it.
