After crossing the US a few times, my odometer reads well over 20.000 km - time to be serviced. One of my rubber belts (that once gave my transmission the nickname 'suspender-drive') seems to be slipping somewhat, and one of my two cylinders is misfiring.
If possible, I would like to return to my hometown (Eindhoven, The Netherlands) for a well-deserved oilchange.
This travelbug pays homage to the Daffodil - a 1960's car from the Netherlands, originally built in the hometown of the owner.
Way back in the 1960's, the Dutch truck manufacturer "DAF" decided to enter the car business. What set these cars apart was their transmission: They were the first cars to feature an automatic continuously variable transmission called "variomatic". Unlike other cars, these ones didn't have distinct gears to choose from; instead it would automatically select the best transmission ratio from a stepless range. This made them very fuel efficient, and very easy to drive, and as a result of the design, it could go as fast backwards as it went forwards. An awful lot of them met an untimely demise at reverse racing events as a result.
A (failed) attempt to enter the American market produced this marketing gem.
