About This Item

PATIENT # 347 - GUILLERMO

Meet Guillermo, patient #347 in our ongoing study of the spread of the zombie plague via geocaching.  Guillermo was a civil engineer, specialized in geotechnical engineering.  This married up perfectly with his deep interest in earth caches, as the science of soil and rock mechanics lent itself well to earth caching.  Guillermo also had a huge interest in rocks and minerals, and was major collector.  He travelled the world when he could in search of new specimens, and often created new earth caches near his finds.  Our research indicated that he also brewed his own beer, and was interested in making cheese, buy never pursued it.  He was a Taurus, and proud to be one.

We believe that Guillermo contracted the zombie plague from Fabian, patient #32 in our study.  Although Fabian was actually a New Yorker, he was one of the originators of an earth caching group in Maryland.  He at one time had an internship in the District of Columbia, and gathered a group of earth cachers from both Maryland and northern Virginia to help him search for coprolite at earth caches in the region. He was a major collector of coprolite and swore that you could tell what sort of animal it came from by tasting it.  On one occasion, he hosted an event to demonstrate this to the group, and while few agreed to lick his coprolite samples, virtually all of attendees handled them, thus being exposed to his saliva.  We believe that this was just enough to provide a transmission vector for the zombie plague.  This particular strain is of major concern, as it seems to lie dormant with no symptoms in the victims for very long periods until bursting forth.  Fabian contracted the plague in April of 2013, and it was not until June of 2016 that Guillermo first started showing symptoms.  Our exhaustive investigations have not shown any contact between Heidi and any other infected cachers, so we believe this must be the link.  We are not yet clear on what the trigger is that causes the disease to activate.

This travel bug is part of a larger study to take a closer look at how the zombie plague might propagate if the primary vector for spreading the disease was geocaching.  Please visit the following website for further details, and a visualization of how the disease has propagated thus far based on the movement and discovery of this and other infected Zombie travel bugs:
