In Europe it is known since the Middle Ages. The oldest European manufacturer (since 1679, www.maultrommel.at) located at Molln, Austria, still produces traditional hand-crafted Jew’s harps for worldwide export. Molln is the centre of “Kalkalpen” National Park too with its Cache as starting point of the Travel Bug.

To play the Jew’s harp simply hold the metal arms with one hand between your lips and push it softly onto your teeth. Then with a finger of your other hand set the metal tongue vibrating. If you variate your mouth's room, which is used as resonance room, you can get out several tones.

Die Maultrommel ist ein uraltes sagenumwobenes Musikinstrument, dessen Ursprung in der Steinzeit in Asien liegt. In Europa kennt man sie seit dem Mittelalter. Die älteste Erzeugungsstätte Europas (seit 1679, www.maultrommel.at) produziert auch heute noch Maultrommeln nach alter Handwerkskunst für den weltweiten Export und befindet sich in Molln, Österreich. Molln ist auch Zentrum des Nationalpark Kalkalpen in dessen Cache der Travel Bug seinen Ausgangspunkt fand.

Sie wird gespielt, indem man die beiden stabförmigen Metallarme mit einer Hand zwischen die Lippen hält und sie sanft gegen die Zahnreihen drückt. Die Zunge der Maultrommel wird nun mit einem Finger der anderen Hand in Schwingungen versetzt. Durch Variieren des Mundraumes, der als Resonanzraum dient, werden verschiedene Töne erzeugt.
