Current Goal

Travelbug Nicos is looking for an amazing man I met years ago on vacation in 1995 and 1996 in Cyprus. In 1997 we were back in Cyprus but couldn't find a trace of him anymore. His name is Nicos Falas and at the time he lived in Nicosia (Lefkosia), Cyprus. Please help travelbug Nicos to find this great man. I guess travelling to Cyprus would be the most logical first thing to do. But I leave it to your detective skills.

About This Item

Nicos

In 1995 I was on a summercamp in Cyprus (near the city of Paphos). My friend Anthony and I had to welcome new visitors of the camp at the Larnaca airport. Since we were poor students at that time who'd rather spend their money on beers then on paying a busride we decided to hitchhike to Larnaca.
We stood for over an hour in the sun before a pick-up truck pulled over. It turned out to be Nicos, a really friendly Cypriot. We had a nice chat in the car and he took us 100 km further than he actually had to go and insisted on paying us a lunch before he left. He asked our phone numbers but we didn't think he'd ever call.

A few days after new year Nicos called me to wish my friend and I a happy new year. I told him that we would possibly return to Cyprus the next summer. I promised I'd contact him when we got there. Off-course we were too busy chasing girls and partying to remember to call him. Every day we said, we'll do it tomorrow.

After two weeks in Cyprus a car stopped at the camp. Two people got out and said they were looking for Anthony and me. It turned out that Nicos sent those people to search for us. He only knew we were on a camp not too far from Paphos so those people looked for 2 days. One of them dialed a number on his cellphone and gave it to me. It was Nicos on the other end of the line who invited us and some friends to Nicosia his town. We made an appointment to come a few days later.

Nicos picked us up at the busstation for a few amazing hours in Nicosia. It seemed that he was a very important man. Without any trouble he got us to the presidential palace, the bishop's palace, the border with the Turkish part of Cyprus, ... After a couple of hours he got a call and had to leave in a hurry but not before he paid a taxi to take us back (more than 100km's).

A year later we were back in Cyprus, telling the story of Nicos to a new camp member. He didn't believe us but since we planned on visiting Nicos again, it would be easy to prove him wrong. We called Nicos on all 4 numbers he gave us. Nobody knew of him. Seemed he didn't exist anymore. We tried several times without result.

The only contact info about him that I have is this:
Nicos Falas, P.O. Box 3591, Lefkosia (Nicosia),Cyprus
phone numers: 02/33 01 45 -- 02/33 41 66 -- 02/33 23 18 -- 09/62 14 93

So many years later Anthony and I still wonder what happened to Nicos. So if anybody can get this travelbug to Nicos, and tell him to contact me, we would be delighted.

We took this from Hunter's Peak in Cyprus (GC17GTC), a place well worth the visit, and which was set by Platonas Two. We have just read the story behind, and really hope this will eventually reach Mr Nicos. We plan to take it a step closer to Nicosia at our next outing.
