End of the Oregon Trail Rock in The Dalles, OR Our city, The Dalles, was the end of the long wagon trail from the middle of the US to the West. Here people had to take their wagons apart and float down the Columbia River to the Portland, Oregon area or they had to pay to take a private road around Mt. Hood to get to the Portland area.
