CZ Ptačí budka je uměle vybudovaná hnízdní dutina pro ptáky. Ptačí budky nahrazují přirozené dutiny, které díky lidskému hospodaření v kulturní krajině zanikají. Jsou to většinou mizející dutiny v odumírajících stromech, ale i zanikající podstřešní prostory v zateplovaných domech.
Jako první budky se zřejmě používaly hliněné nádoby ve středověkém Nizozemsku. Sloužily k hnizdění špačků a vrabců, jejichž mláďata se pak jedla. První budky vyrobené čistě pro podporu hnízdění ptáků či pro usnadnění jejich pozorování začal vyvěšovat Charles Waterton v hrabství Yorkshire na počátku 19. století, většina jím vyrobených budek byla ze dřeva. Budky se pro věděcké účely začaly používat na počátku 20. století. Jakmile začaly být známy přesné potřeby jednotlivých druhů, vyvinuly se moderní ptačí budky a začaly se využívat i jiné matriály než dřevo, kterými jsou sololit, plast, a nejnověji materiál zvaný woodcrete. Dalším trendem v posledních desetiletích bylo rozšíření rozsahu ptačích druhů pro něž jsou budky vyráběny, od druhů hnízdících v dutinách jako sýkorky a červenky, k druhům jako jsou jiřičky, poštolky či puštíci. Ptačí budky jsou nyní vidět v mnoha zahradách a přírodních rezervacích, v areálech škol i dalších institucí, a také stále častěji v průmyslových a komerčních prostorách.
EN A nest box, also spelled nestbox, is a man-made enclosure provided for animals to nest in. Nest boxes are most frequently utilized for birds, in which case they are also called birdhouses, but some mammalian species may also use them. Placing nestboxes or roosting boxes may also be used to help maintain populations of particular species in an area.
The first nest boxes seem to have consisted of clay flasks and were used in medieval times in the Netherlands to house Starlings and House Sparrows, whose young were then eaten. The first ones provided simply to encourage birds for pleasure or observation were perhaps those put up by Charles Waterton in Yorkshire during the early 19th century, by which time most were constructed of wood. Scientific researchers began to make use of nest boxes early in the 20th century. As the exact needs of the birds became better known, the modern types of boxes evolved, and materials other than wood began to be used, such as cement, hardboard, plastic and more recently woodcrete. Another trend during the last few decades has been the extension in the range of birds catered for, from the original nesters in holes and cavities such as tits and Robins to species like House Martins, kestrels and Tawny Owls, and also to animals other than birds. Nest boxes are now seen in many gardens and nature reserves, the grounds of schools and other institutions, and increasingly on industrial and commercial premises.
