January Featured Geocachers of the Month, SerenityNow

Write a comment on this blog post about which of these three geocachers you feel should be the featured Geocacher of the Month. Those whose nominees were not recognized here are encouraged to submit their nominations again next month.

Here are your nominees for the February Featured Geocacher of the Month. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

Nominated by RayandLynn, “Magicman65 is Vice President of the BC Geocaching Association. He is a member of the Mid Island Geocaching Association and a member of the Vancouver Island Geocaching Association.  He teaches geocaching, creates and attends events. Magicman65 encourages geocachers to be respectful of the environment, caches, each other and of course (be respectful of) Muggles. When he comes across a cache that needs maintenance, he will fix it right there on the spot.”

Nominated by HotBarbecuered, “My first encounter with this AMAZING cacher was when I moved to the Windsor Ontario Canada area for my university studies. I later went to my very first caching event in Michigan and found out that Rattrak was behind organizing many of the events in the Metro-Detroit area. Each year, Rattrak is one of the organizers of the Annual Detroit/Belle Isle Event. Rattrak also hosts an semi-annual CITO event and potluck on the island each spring and fall.”

Steve ‘n’ Nancy

Steve 'n' Nancy

Nominated by rvjn, “Steve ‘n’ Nancy has given their all to promoting caching in the North Bend/Coos Bay area. Caching was very limited when they began so they started getting the local cachers together, inviting visitors to dinner, meeting with all, and putting on events on a regular basis. Ask anyone in Oregon and they’ll tell you that the best caches are to be found in Coos Bay/North Bend area.  Steve ‘n’ Nancy make every cacher who comes to the area feel special!”

  • Bunnyrunners

Rattrack gets my vote. He is very active in the southeast Michigan area. Putting on events and has placed numerous caches to enrich the caching experience we usually take for granted.

  • Greendragonfly

After posting my “vote”, I realized that I really hadn’t said anything about just why I am voting for Magicman. He is the epitome of the word geocacher to me. He teaches geocaching to groups and to individuals; helps get people interested; introduced me to geocoins and how to help maintain caches; generally was the driving force in getting me to start into geocaching on my own! His enthusiasm is, I believe, unbounded where geocaching is concerned. Events? He’s there! Group hunts? He’s there! Questions? He’s there! Fun? He’s THERE!!!

  • Team B Squared

Rattrak is the first cacher we ever met while out on the trail, way back in 2006 when we first were getting started.  He also volunteered to take me out for a caching excursion when I was in the Detroit area for work a few years later.  He has been nothing but great to me and it is because of people like him that I enjoy going to events and trying to meet new people.

  • Tikibirds

Tim (Rattrak) is one incredible cacher! He’s mostly known
for his Volunteering, Organizing, Hosting and Co-hosting both CITO and Regular
events. He helped make some of the very first inroads with the greater Detroit
Area community parks departments. He has not only helped other cachers in
placing hundreds of hides, he’s also adopted many caches that have fallen into disrepair
as their owners abandoned them but were worth saving. In addition to have
hidden hundreds of geocaches for the rest of us to find, he’s personally taken
many a noobie cacher under wing, and is, of course, an expert at making of
finds of his own. Tim is a stickler for integrity and holds himself to a
tougher set of “rules” than any other cacher that I know. I couldn’t begin to
count the number of finds he refuses to claim for one reason or another. What
is specifically unique about Tim, is that he’s not looking for the accolades,
the pats on the back, or the awards. He’s just looking to make a positive difference
to those around him. It is because of people like Tim, and his overwhelming selfless
investment of time and enthusiasm, that the rest of us get to have so much fun.

  • Footballoysters

My vote goes to Steve’n’Nancy.  They are great cachers as well as people.  Always making the newest members to the group feel welcome and are willing to help at a moments notice.  Oh, did I mention that they are know for the events that they host. Talk about fun.

  • Teamlowtechtoo

Steve ‘N’ Nancy get our vote! They host wonderful events, provide interesting and creative caches, encourage beginners and people new to the area, and LOVE geocaching! Many people travel far and wide to attend their events knowing what a great area it is to cache in. They are two of the most helpful and friendly people that you will ever meet!

  • Anonymous

My vote goes to Steve n’ Nancy!  I don’t even live at the coast but every year I make sure I make it over to one of Their events.  They go all out in making everyone feel welcome!  When I’m over there If I see a  cache coming up on our travels and its hidden by Steve n. Nancy I know it’ll be a good one!  I wish we had a couple over here in Southern Oregon that does as much for Geocaching as they do!

  • Melialj

I want to vote for Steve N’ Nancy because they are the epitome of ‘meeting the friendliest people while geocaching!’ They reach out and welcome new cachers to the area, are willing to loan out their GPSdevices without deadline, acknowledge the achievements of others in the geocaching world, create the best T-shirt and coin designs, and plan wonderful events that bring us altogether. They deserve this honor more than any other!

  • trail-monkies

Steve’n’Nancy are amazing! They’ve taken this little game and made it HUGE on the Southern Oregon Coast. They tirelessly plan many events to keep the “cachin’ passion” going full bore! Steve’n’Nancy have really promoted their area through geocaching and local businesses have recognized the win/win situation of donating great raffle prizes at events and reaping the rewards of a well attended, much anticipated, yearly event

  • GovernorWorf

Steve ‘n’ Nancy all the way!!  They have been cachers for years, but their numbers don’t really show it because they are always doing more FOR cachers (events, events, events!!!).  I don’t know anybody that could deserve it more.

  • rvls

Steve’n’Nancy are the best.  They were a big help when we visited the Coos Bay area and have done so much to promote the sport in the area.   They get my vote.

  • Paradisemeadows

My vote goes to Magicman65 who enthusiastically came out to show a couple of newbies how to geocache.  His enthusiasm as we trekked through the snowy forest was infectious!

  • Cha Bo

My vote has to go to Steve and Nancy. Always there for every geocacher. Not only would they give the shirt off their back but have it cleaned and pressed beforehand!

  • aleiyn

Steve & Nancy – their motto, “You Meet the Nicest People Geocaching” says it all! I can’t imagine people more invested in promoting the world of caching to everyone they meet by creating a welcoming geo-family here in southern Oregon. The names Steve and Nancy are known far beyond this area, and for good reason. They are the best geo-buddies you could ever have, and their smiling faces serve as amazing geo-embassadors to the community at large.

  • ArrrowO

Me too. Magicman65 gets my vote. Not only has he placed (numerous) caches that are imaginative, different, fun, and occasionally educational, but he is helpful in the extreme, both in organizing events and when it comes to giving assistance to an individual cacher, such as me.

  • Lee & Bev

    Magicman65 gets our vote!

  • Bbybrd

I thought when I heard about this.. Only for the month?.. Well to be fair I suppose.. But I would definitely have to cast my vote for magicman65. Not only does he participate.. And I mean participate.. But he is also the most helpful of the geocachers I know. Creating events that make everyone feel welcome to. Although that also might be the effect that angelcheeks has. A welcoming bunch!

  • Qtipgirl

Rattrak!  Went on my very first geocaching event, totally new to everything, and there he was.  I was totally welcomed in an area that was quite distant from home.  I could tell Rattrak knew all about caching, and I got a lot of questions answered.  The state of Michigan, and most especially the geocaching community, is very fortunate to have someone like this educating them and providing leadership.

I’ve now done several of Rattrak’s caches and can tell that a lot of thought and creativity went into each of them.  He really deserves the award.

  • Two Grands

Our vote goes to Magicman65 – he just seems to be everywhere and is very helpful with new cachers and promoting the fun of geocaching.

  • Shannon McCann

Magicman65 is the man! And has my vote. While I’ve not had the opportunity, yet, to find any of his caches I admire his dedication and love for the sport. He is friendly and helpful to all and awesome with the kids, which in my books is a biggie. All this month’s nominees deserve recognition for their contributions and I wish everyone the best :). Congratulations to all of you!

  • BluHeron17

My vote is for Magicman65 ….. I met him at a recent event and could not help but be impressed by his enthusiasm and energy that extends into this wonderful hobby.  I have since found a couple of his caches which are imaginative and fun to hunt for while taking me to trails that I have never been to before.  I am now beginning to focus on his ‘puzzle’ caches which are full of wit and creativity.  Thanks Magicman65 for infusing this game with so much enjoyment!

  • DodgeExplorer

Our vote is for Magicman65, he works hard for the geocaching community in our province and he does it with a smile on his face, he always ready to help out if you need a hand or advice.

  • Toby and me

Magic man gets my vote he is a great inspiration to all cachers near and far

  • Kalikydd

  • GnJnDad

    Magicman65 gets my vote

  • Diraduck

One more vote for Magicman65 for all the reasons already mentioned. His enthusiasm for Geocaching is contagious he epitomizes what cachin is all about

  • The A-Team

    I’ll vote for Magicman65!

  • Magicman all the way!

He always has a friendly smile on his face, is truly
passionate about Geocaching, he enjoys the game and puts out fun caches.

He is a very good example of what Geocaching is all

He always has time to explain the game and rolls up his
    sleeves to get things done.

  • Cachepiratz

Magicman65…. I have ran into magicman on numerous occaisons on the cache trail  you wouldnt meet a nicer cacher, always prepared to help, maintain, fix or point you in the right direction. His friendly approach to caching and cachers hands down is what this game is all about. He has my vote all the way!!

  • Duckndeedy

Steve “n” Nancy Two great people who have made Coos Bay a must trip in Febuary.

  • Gecko Cacher

Yes Magicman65 is my choice for this prestigious award. His passion for the game and how he connects with fellow cachers is amazing. Using the talents he has developed as a professional magician he incorporates these while volunteering as a Geocaching 101, event coordinator or as a board member of local Geocaching organizations.

  • beenhere

A nicer cacher you will not find. I have been going to Rattrak’s events for years now and have seen him at many other events. He is fun to get out caching with! I have met many cachers who got started after going to one of his caching 101 classes.

  • Ron McClelland

Magicman65 gets my vote for his love of and dedication to our sport!

  • mic’n’di

We’ve gotta say that although all the nominees surely deserve the nomination, our vote goes to Magicman65. We have had the pleasure and privilege of cachin’ with MagicMan in our local area and far flung locales for a few years now. His passion for ‘the game’ is clear; his commitment to volunteering time to support cachin’ are commendable. Often we have had the pleasure of enjoying his skills as a magician…..both when attending events where he sometimes shares his talents….but even more often observing those skills put into the caches he puts together! A Great Guy and a Great Cacher!

  • Easy Choice

MagicMan65 for sure! Always such a giving instructor and so willing to share.

  • blazerfan

Steve ‘n’ Nancy get my vote. Super nice people and their valentines cache event is “The Event” to attend annually in Oregon. So they don’t just promote geocaching on the coast, but for the whole state. I’ve also found a number of their caches which are always fun.

  • Mlleblanc44

sounds  like a great cacher. our type of guy seems like he might need to campaign like another nominee if he wants to win.

  • L3805

Never mind you are married to the guy

  • Dawulf

Rattrack , .. dedicated to the sport , this is the guy that will support even things on the Canadian side of the Detroit River , he will help out anywhere he can , whenever he can . He really makes Geocacher’s and geocaching a GOOD thing for the Detroit area , and the Events that he helps host on Belle Isle are legendary , we attend them annually . Thank you Rattrack for all you do for the Geocaching community in Michigan .. esp the Detroit area.

  • Djmahoney3

    I vote for rattrak!

  • Umpqua Hunters

My vote goes to Steve n’ Nancy.  They are the ‘nicest people’ we’ve every met geocaching.  They have put on several events for all to enjoy.  Everything from flash mobs to camping trips to coin events.  Steve and Nancy are very friendly to all cachers from young to old.  My little one loves to go to their events because they talk to him and give him special toys.  When we get stuck finding a cache, they help us out with hints to find them.  Steve n’ Nancy are a great duo to be awarded the Geocacher of the Month award.  – Umpqua Hunters
