louwtjievdw: Featured Geocacher of the Month for February

Now it’s your turn to help select one of them as the Featured Geocacher of the Month for March.

Write a comment at the bottom of this blog about which of these geocachers you feel should be awarded the featured Geocacher of the Month title.

In February, Uncle Louwtjie, aka louwtjievdw, was named the Featured Geocacher of the Month. He’s known in the South African geocaching community as a creative geocache hider. He’s built a reputation as a geocacher who’s as quick to maintain his geocache hides as he is to make friends with new geocachers. He’s also known for friendly advice, leaving great logs on geocaches he’s found and having a cup of coffee ready for geocachers at his home.

Here are your nominees for the March featured Geocacher of the Month. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

moenk – nominee for Featured Geocacher of the Month

@mic nominated moenk who’s been geocaching since 2003. @mic says, “He (moenk) is the inventor of the very popular “Dönerstag“, an event which is celebrated in more than hundred locations worldwide on the same day. Furthermore, he created the biggest geocaching forum in Germany, Geoclub.de. And last but not least, he was producing a very famous podcast about geocaching called, “Cachetalk.” Another nominee wrote, “Moenk fosters the community towards a healthy growth, a responsible handling of nature and preserving the meaning and fun of geocaching. The Geocacher of the Month is a worthy reward for the energy, the
impetus and the style with which he supports the geocaching community.”

WVTim – nominee for Featured Geocacher of the Month

wallmeister22601 writes, “Tim is an outstanding geocacher who has inspired many a person with his unique and unusual geocaches. His caches are what inspired me to start hiding caches of my own and to continue geocaching.  His caches draw people from other states that come to his home state of West Virginia specifically to search for the wonderful and creative WVTim caches. He has the number one favorite physical traditional cache in the state of Virginia as well.

Tim is one of the most responsible geocache owners that I know. If any of his caches are in need of attention he will make it a point to repair them or replace them as quickly as he can. In short Tim in my opinion is a pillar of the geocaching community that inspires, encourages, educates and gives back so much.”

Christmaxx - nominated as Featured Geocacher of the Month
Christmaxx – nominated as Featured Geocacher of the Month

MallorcaClaudia writes, “They have placed a lot of geocaches in Majorca [including one featured as the Geocache of the Week with more than 350 favorite Points] and all of them are fantastic ones with special places, great views and nice trips. When I met them one year ago on a geocaching event I found out that they are also very friendly and nice people. They have given me a lot of advice on how to place geocaches and how to do the maintenance. For me they have become very good friends and for me the chrismaxx team is an idol.”

Once we have received all of the nominations, we will choose the top candidates and post them on the blog. You will then get a chance to champion your favorite. Our goal is to involve the entire geocaching community in this process so we might learn from each other.

  1. moenk: ermacht enrom viel für die cacher-Gemeinschaft in Deutschland – – moenk: he does so much for the community in Germany

  2. I can understand, that you are reluctant. But moenk openly discusses this issue on his blog. Also, the title is “Geocacher of the Month” – not “Groundspeak fan of the month”. So all in all he has my vote on this.

  3. We vote for moenk! Geoclub has done a lot for geocaching in germany and is a place where geocachers can find help, ideas and make friends.

  4. Groundspeak needs to start doing checks on who gets
nominated for Geocacher of the Month.

Any geocacher, namely moenk, who says that groundspeak
can kiss their butt (putting it nicely), does not deserve to be considered for
such an honor. Nor does a geocacher who readily and willingly spoils other
owners caches and then tells the owners too bad when they ask for him not to spoils
    their cache.

This blog is full of admissions from his fans about this
behavior and his actions. This behavior and attitude does not deserve to be
rewarded as it is a negative reflection of what geocaching and groundspeak
    stand for.

We will cast our vote for a geocacher that truly
represents geocaching and selflessly promotes the sport as well as educating
others by teaching, not spoiling. Our vote is for WVTim.

  5. Red Food, not really sure which geocacher you are referring to, BUT, should it be me, I will rectify, archive the cache or explain my exception if it exists. My email address is located on my profile page. Please email me your concerns along with the GC number of the cache. I would welcome your comments if they are directed towards me.

  6. As others have pointed out WVTims lists of acommplishments is great.
He never spoils other owners caches and has the utmost respect for groundspeak unlike moenk who has comented in his private forum, link on his profile btw, of how groundspeak can kiss his arse. Sure cache are meant to be found moenk but it’s not for you to spoil caches that you don’t own.

  7. For these reasons already mentioned I choose WVTim:

    1. He has placed the #1 Favorited Cache in Virginia and West Virginia, and
the #10 favorited cache in Maryland. He has over 2000 favorite votes on
his caches. Very few of those votes are location based, but rather
because of the uniquest of his hides.

    2. He has coordinated 12 events and 11 of those were educational.

3.He is the Geocaching Merit Badge Counselor for the local Scout troop.

4.He is a geocache volunteer for the State of WV.

5.To encourage building creative caches, he shares his geocaching ideas
with other cachers all over the globe. He spends hours each week
coorresponding to geocachers sharing ideas and diagrams on how to build his
    famous “gadget caches” .

    6. His local town did not allow geocaches on city property, he worked with the
city council to develop an approval process and know geocaches are welcomed and

  8. Yes, yes let’s vote for someone who states groundspeak can kiss his ass. Not!

In my opinion moenk does not instill greatness in caching.

chrismaxx, you look like you are a great geocacher.
But for all he has done and continues to do to help geocaching, groundspeak and educate others we vote for WVTim

  9. As a former GOTM winner, I did quite a bit of research on all of the cachers. All have out standing credentials and I do not know any of them personally, but the cacher I am giving my vote to is WVTim. He constant effort to education, giving back with the NUMEROUS caches he has placed, as well as making sure his caches are properly maintained, which to me is one of the most important things a cacher can do besides educating people about caching.
Tim Stewart (The Weasel) GOTM Jan 2013
