The earned, never for sale, Geocacher of the Month Geocoin (sun flare optional)

The guardian of a vanishing iconic geocache, a couple from the far north of the world who’ve helped create a quality geocaching community, and the president of a geocaching association who leads by the two E’s (enthusiasm and more enthusiasm). We’re honoring these geocachers as nominees for the Geocacher of the Month. Each will receive worldwide recognition for their contribution to the global geocaching community and a prize package from Geocaching HQ in Seattle. Which of these nominees will be named Geocacher of the Month?

This is your opportunity to  help decide who will take home the earned, never for sale, Geocacher of the Month geocoin (at left). Each featured Geocacher of the Month will receive the exclusive special edition geocoin, a hat and profile icon. They’ll also receive a certificate acknowledging their contributions, signed by two of the founders of Geocaching.com.

Dr Evil. - Geocacher of the Month
Dr Evil. – Geocacher of the Month

In August, Dr Evil. was officially named Geocacher of the Month.

One comment details Dr Evil.’s family-friendly approach to geocaching, “His caches are fantastic for kids and getting them interested in caching but also in the great outdoors again. His vlogs on YouTube are always informative, upbeat but above all that you can see his dedication and his passion for finding caches and placing them. He’s organised some great events some for the family, some for the extreme cacher but he is always friendly, polite and always willing to help out a beginner.”

Now it’s your turn to help us select the next Geocacher of the Month. Write a supportive comment at the bottom of this blog for the nominated geocacher that you feel should be awarded the title. A panel of folks from Geocaching HQ will then use your comments to help guide the decision of which geocacher is awarded the Geocacher of the Month honor.

Here are your nominees for the September Geocacher of the Month. Some testimonials have been edited for length.

Carina & Lassie Nominees for Geocacher of the Month

Oskar, username OskarÅ says, “Hi, I would like to nominee an older couple from Sweden that has put a lot of smiles on mine and a lot of more people for sure. There names are Carina and Lasse. I live in the southest part of Sweden and just a few miles from my town they have a ton of great caches! They use all of their free time to go geocaching and also building caches for us other to enjoy. Just by looking at their profile of them you can see how active they are and how many favorite points they have on their caches. They are really creative and are the most inspirational geocachers I know.”

Old Navy

Old Navy3_trim
Old Navy Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

Lynn Groves Lussier (aka Ranger Lynn) says, “Since his inaugural year of caching in 2005, Old Navy has placed 372 hides and found 2,892 caches.  Undoubtedly, his greatest contributions to the geocaching community have been through his dedicated leadership as president of the Northern New Jersey Cachers (NNJC) for the last six years.

Inspiring by example and genuine enthusiasm, yet never one to seek the limelight, the success of NNJC is a testament to Old Navy’s wizardry “behind the curtain.”  In addition to converting muggles into members by hosting monthly Meet & Greet events, his skill in connecting NNJC to the geocaching community at large shines through in both his editorial expertise in overseeing the NNJC newsletter, as well as his social media savvy in daily managing the NNJC Facebook page, Twitter site, and official club website.”

Junior Intervales
intervales – Nominee for Geocacher of the Month

Carbon Hunter from South Africa says, “It is not often that one can nominate a cacher with so few finds as global geocacher of the month. However I would like to nominate cacher INTERVALES from Brazil as the geocacher of the month. Junior only has 17 finds and 21 hides.

So what exactly makes this cacher so special and worthy of a nomination (and hopefully being awarded this prestigious award)? Junior is one of those extremely special cachers who stays in a remote area of the world (on the edge of the Brazilian Atlantic Forests) and has hardly travelled from his home base of Capao Bonita in the Sao Paulo province. What makes him extremely valuable and a huge asset to our game is that he is the custodian of the last surviving APE cache in the world. While not being a prolific finder, Junior maintains the APE cache in a very harsh environment (high humidity and heat that can lead to cache degradation). Apart from the APE cache, he has also placed a good few Earthcaches in the surrounding area and maintains traditional caches of his own, and of visiting cachers that travel to the park to find the APE cache.

He is really embodies what all of us seek and attempt to emulate in a cacher, and this especially from a cacher who has not had the opportuntity (like many of us) to find a multitude of caches in our direct environment. I hope that you too will give Junior your vote – and help keep the APE cache alive. I also hope that many many more cachers will have the opportunity to find the APE cache as I did.”

Comment below to tell us who you think should be the September Geocacher of the Month. We will be accepting comments through October 14.

  • foofy

I’ve had just enough of this popularity contest. It’s a sham of a process. You want to recognize a cacher fine, but don’t make it into a campaign where my inbox is inudated with VOTE FOR, the local Geocaching Organization webpage is turned into a CAMPAIGN HEADQUARTERS, and social media is lit up with daily reminders of vote, nominate, blah blah blah.

Old Navy works tirelessly with the Northern New Jersey communities promoting Geocaching and educating not only the public, but public officials as well. He organizes many great events and always has time to meet and greet fellow cachers. We look forward to his many great caching events G.O.N.E and CTTS. He gets our vote.

  • wifeyandme

Old Navy is a true leader and cares about geocaching.

  • Brian O.

Old Navy gets our vote! Our caching family has always enjoyed the events hosted by the NNJC, and John has been tireless in his pursuit of quality caches and group events. He is so deserving of this honor!

  • ed

john always puts together great events and hides awesome caches. well rounded and a motivated person who’s carrying the hobby to new heights.

  • Kyle O.

Old Navy all the way! I remember when our family did the GONE event at Camp Glen Gray, and it was the Indiana Jones theme. John was so excited about the caches, and my mom and I were the first ones to find Indy at the end of the event’s multi. It was really fun! Old Navy also hide many very cool theme caches, like his LOST series and Pirates of the Caribbean. There was always that extra effort put into his hides that made them special. Old Navy deserves the vote for Cacher of the Month!

  • Robert Willhoft

Casting another vote for Old Navy. John has been a great proponent of Geocaching and an excellent Ambassador for the Geocaching community (both in the tri-state NJ/NY/PA area and elsewhere around the country).

  • Magicman

No contest, Old Navy works harder than anyone I know spreading the joy of geocaching. Magicman/sewjourner

  • Lynn G.

    Intervales no doubt

  • Knottyjane

INTERVALES should be the one receiving this award with the dedication he shows, I wish that half the caches who place caches out there would take care of theirs like he does.

  • CaptainMath

Old Navy has been a huge contributor to the game in the Northeast, particularly Northern New Jersey for a long time. It is his initiative that gives birth to many of the events that occur in North and Central New Jersey, and he has hidden many fun geocaches in the area, usually areas that entertain, challenge, teach, and create the kind of memories that keep this hobby a worthwhile investment of time.

What probably singles him out from other geocachers more than anything else though is the way he serves our geo-community by being an intermediary between geocachers and many civic organizations in his area. At a time when geocaching comes under scrutiny in many areas of the country, his work has brought positive PR to geocaching and geocachers.

While some geocachers garner attention for the number of finds they accrue, John/Old Navy is one of those who give much more to the game than they take from it. I have no hesitation in giving my vote to the guy with the big smile and the gleaming white coiffure 😉 Win or lose this vote, he’s a winner already. Congratulations Old Navy!

  • Joyous

I have had the pleasure to not only find Old Navy’s caches but get to know him as well. He is dedicated to the Geocaching community and works tirelessly to promote the ‘sport’ and increase awareness of caching. John has planned a multitude of events, hid new caches and as President of the NNJC has inspired new as well as experienced cachers to get involved. John has built community partnerships with well known organizations to establish ecologically friendly access to beautiful parcels of land throughout the Tri-State area. Due to his dedication as a volunteer Old Navy certainly deserves the honor of being known as September’s cacher of the month.

  • Poolguy

I vote for Old Navy this man I the embodiment of Geocaching. I don’t know anyone more involved and determined to promote Geocaching. He organizes many Geocaching 101 events and has made inroads into Many other organizations that our group is now partnered with which is getting the word out to so many others that would not have known about this great and very healthy pastime.

  • Lisa Mora

Old Navy hands down! John brings above and beyond to this area. I have seen so many areas that I would never have had it not been for his interesting sites and interesting history. He is well-respected and one of the nicest people I have met in this hobby. He has put his heart into Geocaching and it shines. His events are always fun, friendly and well-organized and is always there for any questions, concerns, or just plain good conversation. If there is a vote for Cacher of the YEAR, John you earned it! Good luck, nocturnalnavigators

  • szena

my vote goes for Old navy.
He helped the geocachers a lot and personally helped me in my community work for the school.
He is a real rolemodell for any cahcer around the world

  • BethRitterGuth

Old Navy is one of the best geocachers in the game! He really is a champion for geocaching, and has helped new residents of New Jersey pick up on their love of geocaching by hosting events and hiding new caches! He has done SOO SOO much for the advancement of the hobby, and has truly been an ambassador in NJ by linking up with the Audobon society, NJ Parks, etc. He provides education, as well. He SO SO SO SO deserves to be geocacher of the month!!!!

  • Frank Tucker

This guy is great! My vote is for Old Navy. I hope he wins because he really deserves it.

  • Carla Moura

    my vote goes to intervales!

  • MyLardyDad

Old Navy requires more than “Geocacher of the Month”. He has been a tireless advocate for Caching in NJ and an inspiration to many. I was a significant milestone when I found my 100th Old Navy cache just a few weeks ago.

He has also been a valuable resource in other ways beyond the hundreds of caches he has hidden. He was super helpful when My Son wanted to a project at school on Geocaching, supplying advice and even offering to come in and talk with Staff.

It is People like him that make this a community, and I cannot think of another cacher for whom I have more respect and time.

  • Ayla223

OLD NAVY – During the past two years of geocaching I have been totally amazed at the amount of work that Old Navy has dome for the betterment of geocaching. He has developed partnership programs with such prestigious organizations such as: the Audubon Society, Schiff Nature Preserve, Duke Island Conservancy, The Great Swamp Watershed Association, just to name a few. In addition to the many projects with local, county and state organizations. And, as President of the the Northern New Jersey Cachers he organizes and implements 8-10 major functions and special event each year. Old Navy, John Neale, is the most fitting ambassador for geocaching. He is a spectacular individual. OLD NAVY gets my vote.

  • Tina Corvin Petersen

Old navy’s caches are synonymous with caching in Northern NJ. And he’s always there to help in a pitch. I’ve been stumped and John picks up his phone, remembers the details of one of his hundreds of caches and points me in the right direction. And he hardly knows me except as someone who’s singed a lot of his logs. He’s really put himself out there to make caching in NNJ a great experience.

  • Dolfy

My vote would have to be for Old Navy. He’s a great guy that has really helped shape the caching community in NNJ. He’s always having some sort of fun event that could have you tromp through the snow and having hot chocolate in the woods or having a good dinner with a bunch of friends. He definitely deserves it!!!

  • Prinnycook

Old navy hides some of the best caches in New Jersey. His pirate series is the best ever, he is my choice.

  • mk1racer

What more can be said about Old Navy? To me, he totally embodies what geocaching is all about. Fun, adventure, creativity, personal challenge, meeting new people, stewardship, education, conservation, etc.

I found several of Old Navy’s caches before I had the pleasure of meeting him in person. He always has great hides! And I never cease to be amazed at all the different places he gets to to make his hides. I think he’s found out how to squeeze more than 24 hours into a day!

He really does eat, sleep, live, and breath geocaching. Honestly, I think Geocacher of the Year is probably more appropriate!

  • Mrs. S

Old Navy definitely! Not only is Old Navy tireless in his efforts to promote geocaching – he’s a really nice guy!

  • SlinkyPink

Congratulations to all three nominees!! My vote goes to Old Navy!!! I hope John receives not only the Cacher of the Month honor, but Cacher of the Year, Decade, etc!!! John’s passion for creating a quality experience for all geocachers in phenomenal!! We in NJ are blessed to have such a dedicated ambassador for geocaching. John’s tireless efforts have created win-win relationships with land managers throughout the state. His vision for theme-based geo-trails in NJ is spectacular. All geocachers benefit from his efforts. We can’t thank him enough for his leadership and inspiration!!

  • TheSurfcaster

I vote Old Navy for geocacher of the month. It’s not for the number of caches he has hidden or the number of events he has organized but is for his endless passion supporting and promoting geocaching. He is always looking for new opportunities to help grow the sport of geocaching and through these efforts continues to introduced new geocachers into the sport.

  • mustangsally23

Old Navy has helped us learn the ropes of caching and we have kept in touch since. He dedicates so much time and effort to thi cause and he is the ultimate geocacher! NNJC and geocaching wouldn’t be where it is today without him. As the face of the NNJC and caching here, Old Navy deserves to be not only the Geocacher of the Month but the year and beyond!

  • geoffbike

Old Navy should certainly be chosen as Geocacher of the month! When you find a really good quality, interesting cache in Northern New Jersey, chances are it was placed by Old Navy. What a huge contribution!

  • guest

Old Navy! His caches are creative and he does great work through NNJC!

  • Streamertyer

OLD NAVY. I can’t think of anyone who has done more to promote geocaching in this area. His dedication, outreach, caches, events and management of NNJC is second to none. I firmly echo others sentiments below. Hard to really add much. A model and icon of the tristate caching scene, to which we all owe a debt of gratitude. Kudos!

  • CacheWalker 9000

If you’ve ever gone geocaching in Northern New Jersey, then you’ve almost certainly found an Old Navy cache. And it’s not only about quantity with Old Navy, but more so about quality. He is one of the most caring cache owners I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. If there is a problem with one of his caches, he gets out to it within the week to fix it (as opposed to others which may remain in a state of disrepair for months). Additionally, Old Navy revisits his old series every few years to replace them with new caches, giving cachers like myself another opportunity to cache in our favorite local parks.

I couldn’t even begin to describe all the effort that Old Navy puts in to run the NNJC organization, develop and maintain lasting relationships with important parks organizations around the state, and organize so many quality events for the North Jersey caching community. I will leave the specifics about Old Navy’s dedication to those things to the other posters. Thank you for all your hard work John!

  • Sally Rubin

I am happy to cast my vote for Old Navy. He has coordinated 3 events in the past year (with a 4th event this month) with our non-profit environmental organization, Great Swamp Watershed Association. Each event has brought in more than 100 new people interested in geocaching and the outdoors, making a great connection between the two groups. He has placed several geocaches on our preserved property and works with many other environmental organizations, county and state parks.
    Sally Rubin

  • ShanRock

I have been to an Old Navy event and found many of his caches – even with being newer to caching I could easily tell his love and dedication to developing the geocaching community. I definitely vote for Old Navy.

  • dhenninger

I would like to cast a vote for Old Navy. I have worked with him in the NNJC for may years. As President, John has devoted Many Many hours to both our local geocaching group and to the geocaching community as a whole. He has promoted geocaching to any one who will listen, and a few people who even tried not to listen. He has placed a large number of quality caches and tons of events. He has created a number of key partnerships that have strengthened the geocaching community in the part of the world. Working with land owners and organizations to promote responsible geocaching, as well as recruiting many new geocachers.

  • 04cubtag

    I vote for Old Navy

  • Mathews With 1 T

I have to put my vote in for John (old navy). He hides some great caches and the best events. 100% dedicated to expanding and getting new people into geocaching. Clever hides and huge events are what he is all about!

  • Ericles

My vote goes Carina and Lasse because they’re deserving of some
recognition in this contest and the only vote they’ve received so far
was actually for the person that nominated them. 🙁 I’m also voting for
them because that’s what I believe Old Navy would do. In this silly
popularity contest that was decided long before they let us “vote” all
of the nominees should be recognized for their contributions to the
game. TFTCM Intervales but maintaining one cache – no matter how well –
is just one cache. Thousands of cachers put in more time. Three of them
are Carina, Lasse and Old Navy. Their caches don’t come with special
icons and weren’t backed by a $100,000,000 movie. They just are – and
they’re loved. The total number of favorite points on their caches is
unreal! C&L have only been caching since 2011 while Old Navy has
been doing his thing for almost 9 years. In that time he’s participated
in the hiding/hosting of over 600 caches all while being an ambassador
of the game with local town, county and even state officials. I can’t
say too much more about C&L as I can’t read the cache pages but all
those favorite points can’t be wrong. Unfortunately Old Navy couldn’t
garner as many as he has hosted too many events which cannot be awarded
favorite points but he’s not in the game for these little
acknowledgements anyway. Like C&L he spends most of his free time in
furthering the game of geocaching and, though I can only vote for one
in this contest, John is very deserving of a win. Congrats to all three

  • Maria

I vote for Intervales. He looks after the last surviving APE-cache in such an extreme environment, all the other ones have already gone.

  • earthymert

Old Navy has my vote. The previous voters have said it all.

  • Donna Funk

Old Navy! If I post anything else, I would be repeating what everyone else has said 🙂

  • IntervaleMike

Old Navy is a great guy. I remember long nights volunteering to screen-print t-shirts for some of our NNJC annual Events. He really has his heart in the right place, and this is long deserved and an honor to be nominated for.
    -IntervaleMike and MustangSally23

  • Jenny Gaus-Myers

Old Navy has been a tireless advocate for geocaching and we at the Morris County Park Commission are very grateful for all he’s done to get us in on the action! GO OLD NAVY!

  • happysenior

Visiting from Florida. Met a very enthusiastic geocacher who encouraged me to vote form Old Navy. After reading about Old Navy and his contribution to the geocaching community I felt compelled to vote for him.

  • Heifera

I only cache intermittently, but you cannot cache in NJ without stumbling across an Old Navy hide. I always enjoy his themed multi-caches and appreciate that all my local parks have many caches that can require several days to find all of them thanks to his work. When a cache goes missing, or the hide is no longer that great due to various changes in the environment, he is always quick to rework them. He definitely deserves the honor of geocacher of the month.

  • Ragtime Fan

I’m voting for Old Navy. Nobody does more behind the scenes to promote safe, quality geocaching in North NJ. A fantastic geocacher!
